There is absolutely no way the ATF is not preparing for the eventual digitization of their systems and then a fight for a searchable database that they are prohibited by law from having. Furthermore, if one is familiar with how the Federal Government operates, the moves they make now are setting up the push five or even ten years down the road.”

Guess how the ATF can get those records even faster.

Pass draconian laws requiring million dollar liability insurance policies, expensive safe-storage gun laws for gun stores, etc.

When your local gun store can't afford to stay in business and they close, ATF gets the records.

Unless you bought something privately and have never talked about it with anyone, never posted a picture of it, never did an internet search about it or bought accessories for it, you can assume that .gov already has at least an idea of what you have.

Private sales are legal. Even in gun shows, there will be tables with stuff for sale by private owners.

I urge everyone to read this: With the understanding that through the NRA, Congress wrote provisions to limit access to the 4473's. This was obliterated in the Patriot Act. But the point is the Government got their foot in the door and are now pushing that door to be wide open.

When did things change?By 1968, there were rumbles of rebellion against gun control within the NRA. Though the organization supported the Gun Control Act, it blocked attempts to include a national gun registry and a requirement for all gun carriers to hold a license. Then in 1971, federal agents shot and paralyzed longtime NRA member Kenyon Ballew during a gun raid at his home in Maryland. Anti-government sentiment surged within the ranks, and hard-liners became increasingly impatient with the leadership's "soft" stance. Things came to a head on the night of May 21, 1977 — known in NRA lore as the Revolt at Cincinnati — when gun-rights radicals stormed the group's annual meeting in Ohio and demanded changes to the governing structure. The old guard was ousted, and new Executive Vice President Harlon Carter, who had served time for shooting dead a Mexican teenager, spelled out the new approach: "No compromise. No gun legislation." The NRA would become an organization "so strong," said Carter, "that no politician in America mindful of his political career would want to challenge [our] goals."

During the 1968 GCA debate, the NRA threatened southern democrats over 4473's in that the information was not to be shared with any LE without due process. It was the only way Congress who in those days feared NRA members, could get the bill passed. So with that in the bill, the NRA threw their support to the bill, and BOOM the rest is history. I have often wondered if the NRA used the law to build up the NRA.

So if you are at the liquor store with your wife, and she places her favorite bottle of wine on the checkout. The clerk asks for ID she shows her ID .The store rings up the sale and you hand the clerk your credit card, who is making the purchase. Hmmm? Ridiculous? But wait there's more.

This is borderline entrapment. Two undercover agents posing as man and wife buy a gun, she fills out the forms and he pays for the gun.

Agreed in that if they had a need or perceived notion to build a dossier on you for whatever reason, That is when they get info from Alexa - Sirri - Google and the ATF.

It is ridiculous.

My wife and I have bought several guns while both shopping together.

The money all comes out of the same joint account.

Whoever's going to be the primary user is the one who fills out the 4473, but that's a pretty irrelevant difference for us.

My wife did the 4473 for her G42, I did the one for my PS90, but they are only "hers" and "mine" in the most pendantic sense.
