This really angers me. Because all this does is discourage people who need mental health services from seeking it out.

If you have anxiety you should feel confident to seek treatment and know that your rights will still be protected.

This is extremely frustrating the position gov puts us in. There are people who absolutely need mental health services but are ignoring it or self medicating because they know if they try to better themselves they're at very real risk of going to lose their guns. That's an absolute tragedy to me. This issue is very frustrating.

See and that's a complete shame. Our politicians have failed us. Often times we may be in a position to choose to preserve our rights or seek improved health. There are circumstances where those 2 interests are not overlapping.

The irony is we All agree we want gun owners to have sound excellent mental health but it is politicians who are preventing that very thing from happening by their policies.

I know a woman who has considered applying for her pistol license but hasn't gone through because she took the class and upon reading and completing the paper application the mental health questions freaked her out because she also has anxiety and it's documented with her Dr. She's not a threat to anyone but has things like career stress etc. She so stopped the process and hasn't pursued it further. Shame on you NY.

It reminds me of the guy in Buffalo that got jacked up shortly after the unSAFE Act went through simply because he was prescribed anti-anxiety meds for like dentist visits or something. That's a hard pass for me.

Search out a psychologist or psychiatrist who administers or provides MMPI testing and support. They are not that difficult to find using search engines.

These are screening tests used to screen various professionals such as police recruits, nuclear power plant workers, certain childcare professionals, and some military personal.

After taking a version of this written test the mental health professional can provide a letter based on a widely accepted clinical screening tool without the liability of a general practioner who did not have supporting data.

Best of luck to you. A doctor doesn’t want the liability to write you a letter saying you are fit to own a firearm.

definitely this, and if in NYC, its possible the docs have a political bias as well.
Also agree with other posters that there may be more to the story that has not been disclosed, if said story is legit

I still think you need to contact a counsel since doctors might not do it unless there is an approved process and for liability reasons. Why would they do it if the process is not defined or approved?
The PD might be asking for something they know many people will have a hard time getting to see if they give up their rights due to thr red tape. This arbietrarity is part of their sloppy plan.

But this is an idea. Find a place where they do a psychometric test for law enforcement, military, security, etc....
Ask for one to apply for a Sheriffs department job and to have it cleared before hand.
Of course you dont need to apply to any jobs.
Then submit the results of the report that is an official document.
One of those official certificates is even better than a letter from a primary doctor.

I have done several of these in my life. Also overseas is needed in many places just to go do competition shooting or hunting and mandatory for a hunting license aside any other requirements a hunting reserve or shooting organizers might have.

I think the OP has a problem, like having been commmitted at some point. I had a customer that has that issue. He is basically SOL on a federal level. There has been no direct address of my questions, which is fine but, it tells me there is much that is not disclosed.....
