Attorney: Boy shot was rushed to hospital by suspect's wife

This happened in my precinct Saturday evening.

The bullet traveled through a wall and a floor, hit the child and still passed through his shoulder before lodging in another wall.

9mm FMJ fired from a Glock 19. I wouldn't believe it if I wasn't told by a Detective I know and trust.

Watch those FMJ's people...

People who aren't used to handling firearms have no concept of the power that they're holding. It's like handing someone a lightsaber for the first time and expecting them to retain all of their limbs.

Someone I know was shot accidentally with a 9mm FMJ and it went into the hip region and right out the back with, all things considered, not terrible damage. It's exactly the opposite of what you're going for with all those ballistics gelatin tests.

The same thing would have happened with a 9mm hollowpoint that misses a body.

A benefit of hunting is you get to see the tiny little hole where it went in and then the exit cavity and then NO life Left in the animal the bullet went through. When you sit and poke holes in paper all your life you don't have a realistic understanding of how dangerous and permanent a bullet is once it leaves it barrel. You just cant take it back or do a do over its gone for good and most likely going to destroy everything it comes in contact with . Take a friend hunting

Would the combustion of a round be considered science? And a bullet could in such a way act like a rocket does.

Theoretically...it could be rocket science.

@Bananabandit i know your making fun .. but at my last range day with friend and kids .. my friend went to shoot prone on the ground next to the bench and his boy ran around the front of the bench to catch his brass as i was loading up, bolt open and shouldering my 270win adjusting my scope .. my eyes and ear are full attention when i have my gun out .. i seen him and jumped back .. i don't take this accident or negligent crap .. when i was 14 i put a rabbit out , yanked up the shotgun , eyes on the rabbit .. FUCK!!! the DOG!!! she was in the house when i left .. never shot and that rabbit ran between her front legs ..

Actually had a non-negligent "accidental discharge" once.

Long story from long ago (1970) made, well, probably too long - it was a Ballester-Molina [Argentine .45 ACP ("The Soul Taker"); The Ballester Molina Pistol: Argentina’s Almost 1911].

Lived out in the bush in west central PA and had to go into town for a while. A car pulled up outside as I was leaving, so went back inside and locked and loaded the Ballester. Everything looked and felt good, so gave it to my now ex with the safety on and the holster strap covering the hammer. She could shoot it, but not rack the slide.

I come back 3-4 hours later and she's walking through the yard with her purse, and it looks heavy. Inside she tells me someone climbed into the deserted 3rd floor, she was scared, so she got the pistol out of the holster and took the safety off. Then she went to the downstairs neighbors with the pistol in her purse. Shit!!!

We go upstairs, I take it out of her purse, put the safety on, drop the magazine and, the nanosecond I moved the slide a millimeter or less the hammer dropped and "BOOM!!!". Luckily it was pointed in a safe direction.

Loaded with a standard velocity 230 gr FMJ - it was pointed downwards (my one error since it was roughly towards the neighbors downstairs) when it went off, but I had purposefully pointed it at my text books and notebooks. The round went through 2 textbooks (big biochemistry and microbiology mothers), my biochem notebook, the table pad (half inch hard packed felt with a leather cover), through a 1" thick hard cherry table and just made it through the floor.

Scared the shit out of me.

This is what caused it:

the crossbar (on the left) between the 2 tines of the sear had broken off (probably when I loaded it), leaving two tiny and jagged needle tips engaged on the hammer. Moving the slide just that little "silly millimeter" was enough to drop the hammer. My ex was lucky it didn't go off and kill her, or someone else, after putting it in her purse out of the holster and with the safety off. Told her to only unholster and take off the safety if a stranger was at the door and tried to get in. If they wouldn't stop and tried to get in she was to empty the magazine into the door. Always wondered if it would have gone full auto?

Upside was, everyone in biochem class thought the notebook with a bullet hole in it was cool.

Without getting into specifics, I am aware of an incident from years ago where a .357 hollow point went through 3 walls, and then it expanded when it impacted an 1/8" thick steel plate. Although it didn't make it through the plate, it bent the shit out of it and ended up in small crater that it formed.. The flared bullet exactly fit the crater, and formed petal marks in it.

What I don't understand is why it didn't flare open as it hit the three walls.

Yup.

When I take my go-to home defense pistol out to practice my dry-fire drills, I clear the pistol each and every time before I pull the trigger (even though I store it empty with a full magazine next to it). I "know" I put it away unloaded. But, safety always comes first.

If the shooter was unaware of the 10 to 15, or so, rules of gun safety (not just a mere 4) then what does reminding us of them matter after the fact. The plain and simple truth is he should not have picked it up and whoever left it laying there loaded should have secured it from someone with a apparent childlike curious mind or at least should have told the arsehat that any guns in the house were loaded and not to handle them. Those two things I just mentioned are, or should be, common sense in the mind of a responsible adult and do not have to be taught as do gun safety rules. Sure gun safety rules are great but if you are unaware of them, then at least use some intelligent common sense if you see a gun. Leave it the fuck alone. I guess though there are just too many arsehats out there for that to ever become universal sense.

Sheet rock is probably the answer. If it went into a wall in my house, chances are it would not come out the other side unless the wall had been replaced during renovations. My walls are plaster on one side with lattice work supporting the plaster and more plaster or brick on the other side depending on whether a completely internal wall or a wall abutting the exterior of the house.
