New pistol shooters wanted, Sun Nov 13, Blue Mtn Sportsman Center

Hi,

We are conducting an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course that culminates on Sunday November 13th 2016 at the Blue Mountain Sportsman Center in Cortandt (Peekskill) NY. Shooters would be needed for two hours, from 1:30pm - 3:30pm

I am looking for 3-4 relatively NEW pistol shooters who would not mind playing the role of "test subjects" for my instructor candidates while receiving what will be top notch one on one instruction on pistol shooting fundamentals.

There is a minimal fee ($25); participants would be subject to multiple exposures of proper range safety briefings and shooting from the bench rest and two handed standing shooting position. Best of all you get to peek behind the curtain to see how instructors are made, and get a chance to participate in their evaluation.

Our courses are always supervised by well experienced RSOs and Chief RSOs.

Can you please remind me whereabouts you are? I get invites from a few ranges every year to teach, most of those classes are never made public, but I always reserve the option of having one or two slots in those classes.

I don't want to say shooting pistol is easy, because it is not. I can say, with proper guidance it is fairly easy for the new shooter to latch onto those skills needed to shoot well. I took someone to Wooster Mtn (Danbury CT) recently, he had never shot a pistol before. On our second range session he was ringing the steel target out at 75 yards 4/10.

Full disclaimer: He was shooting a Sig X6, and he didn't think that was so hot to trot, because I hit the steel 10/10 left handed.

Yes definitely let me know, I've been itching to take a few classes, but my schedule always seems to conflict when MDTS is giving a class locally. I'm also a member of an indoor range, but its small I doubt it would be worth you coming up here for such a small venue.

@FCG LLC I'm in Rochester. I would consider myself a new shooter only because I've been carrying for less than a year and am always absorbing hints/tips and trying to learn new things. I've been around guns for a long time though. Probably have some bad habits, so trying to reset those and get on a better level.

When I was taking Pistol 102 up at Sig, I figured everyone would be around the same level of experience. One dude was just an awesome shot, very fast, very smooth, etc. I asked him about his shooting background, and he said he was a cop, something else LEO, and now he's a DEA agent.

I asked him why the hell he was in Pistol 102, and he said every so often, he runs through the classes to keep his fundamentals up to date

I agree with that sentiment. Although I received basic handgun training in the military I never had to qualify with a pistol and never really took advantage of the training. I was 18 and thought I had more important things to worry about. It's funny I shoot in a defensive pistol league in the summer and my scores are usually pretty good (near the top). The only reason I think this is, is because the adrenalin is flowing. If I slow fire I don't find my shooting to an acceptable skill level. Maybe I'm being to picky because of my long range shooting career.

He's smart. I do similar things - there is always something to be learned or refined, if you keep an open mind. Some of my certs require continuing training and education. I don't always want to recycle thru the same courses, so I will sometimes sit thru something I "should" already know, and walk away with a ton of new or refined information. Even if it's how NOT to do something, that is also good and valuable information.

Chris Fry (MDTS) is near you, and he is pretty damn good. I've trained with him, he has sent people my way, one of his assistant instructors also works with me. I've also heard good things about Rochester Personal Defense.

My goal is to help to raise the awareness and abilities of ALL gun owners, and for all of us to get as many people safe and proficient in the shooting sports. I'd much rather see someone get some training, that be a selfish person trying to get every single person I touch thru my door.

When we can safely practice any sport it is a benefit to all - and especially us here in this ass backwards of a state.

I'm a little confused by the NRA guidelines/requirements for the NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting Course;- The website says that I need to complete the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting - Phase 1online class before taking the Phase 2 class.
In 2014 in order to obtain my pistol permit I took and passed the NRA Basic Pistol Course (4hr classroom + 4hr live fire).
Do I still have to take the online class?

In 2016 the NRA changed Basic Pistol to a "blended learning" format, where the new course is online (Phase 1) and finishes up with Phase 2 (hands on with an instructor). This costs $60, payable directly to the NRA.

All new pistol instructor candidates are required to complete Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the student courses in order to be Basic Pistol Instructors

The NRA Basic Pistol course when you took it was 8hrs, but I believe the range component was only 2 hrs, so somewhere in the mix the instructor that gave your class made a judgement decision on what was important for the students, but may not have held true to the specific lesson plan for that course.

I would like to attend this. I've taken a few basic pistol courses and it's been too long since I've been at the range. I've got a 9mm Shield I got in March and still haven't even shot yet Shame on me....
