new reloading issue

I was reloading 160gr FTX 30-30 with 35.5 gr of LeveRevolution powder.

Im out of FTX bullets so I switched to Hornady 170gr FP interlock.

My problem now is, when I try to seat the bullet, the bullett falls into the freak'n case?

Do i have the wrong die? It's all in one seat and crimp die? It worked great on the FTX bullets. Now Im just frustrated 'cause I have no idea what to do about the bullet just falling into the case.

any suggestions

FYI, Im using a dillon 550b

If you have a set of calipers, check the bullet diameter. I believe it should be 0.308".

It sounds like the bullets are under sized.

yep, thought about that, they are perfect at .308

A couple of things....

- Has your sizing die moved?
- Is your expander ball clean?
- What was the diameter of the FTX bullets?

If you have confirmed that the casings were resized can you tell us (or maybe even take a picture) of how you measure the bullets diameter? It could be that the bullets are nominally .308.

They may be stretched and be thin walled.


Is all your brass the same head stamp?
If you have different head stamps the cases might be thinner walled.

It might be just a bullet or two are under sized too.

I have had that happen to 357 rounds. But I have several different head stamped cases.

uuum, maybe thats the issue. The sizing/decapping is one die. I didn't run them through the the sizing die because I figured I could save some time by just sticking a case under the seating/depth die and going from there

This is their first reload, yes they are all the same headstamp. I checked 10 of the bullets, out of 100, and evey one was exactly at .308. Im going to try and resize the cases before I go any further.

Wait what? Are you saying that you used the seating die to also resize the neck of the case? If you did you resized the entire bullet to be thinner than the inside of the neck. Those bullets would never stay in the neck.

no, on a dillion 550b press, the first posititon in resizing and decapping, the second stage is powder load and the third stage is bullet depth & seating

I was trying to depth and seat the bullet before sizing. DUH! the bullet drops right through the neck.

I'll have it straightened out tomorrow

To be fair, I made my guesses before you said you weren't resizing the cases.
