exactly. In the entry department everyone is delivering value though to be impossible but many companies are still trying to figure out how to mass produce
accurate and reliable firearms while keeping the price points. If you look at the modern design features everyone is now following savages long established
directives with the only difference that savages is decades ahead in quality cost effective manufacturing methods and materials.
Every brand and model is going to show a lemon here and there but for the most part should be safe and reasonable accurate and reliable. The difference
with the savage is that more times than not you get a better shooter (Consistency in manufacturing) vs. Ruger, R783, patriot, etc... where consistency
is not at the level of savages. It doesn't mean a patriot or ruger cannot be accurate, in fact they are but on average the chances is that the savage
will be the most accurate. Aside for the axis I crappy trigger that can be fixed this consistency comes from two key features:
A) The floating / replaceable bolt heads that are very consistent.
The R783 has incorporated this design feature but if you look closely is not as refined and well executed as the long established savage design.
B) Savage Barrel making / chamber.
Nobody make barrels like savage budget. Some budget barrels have shown accuracy and consistency only though to be possible with $500 match
barrels. Their barrels are so good that are used by other brands. All barrels from light hunter budget to the high end precision carbines are made
by them with the same quality standards. This takes years if no decades to master. Again, it doesn't mean ruger or R cannot produce a quality
barrel but I am saying consistency on budget.
their barrel nut system also helps get a perfect headspace and now adopted by every other rifle mentioned above.
I do not work nor endorse savage. I am giving this opinion unbyassed and in good faith having taken many of these rifles down, rebarreling
and inspecting barrels. Choosing a budget rifle should not be rocket science but it doesn't hurt to know which features are popular,
average quality and perhaps which ones lend itself to be good baselines to upgrade and grown on them. That is why I always consider Savage 10/11
and Remington 700 over any other action due to aftermarket support being those the most popular actions on the planet by a huge margin.
Essentially there are enless upgrades one can do to them, and endless supply of parts for a life time of use. I mean the mauser is the other
very popular action but mostly overseas along with a few military rifles.

Howa are nice rifles but for that style the actions are not in the same level as a modern winchester M70 post 64.
IMHO you will not find better value than the Savage 10 FCP-SR 308 even w/o the rebate.
Don't need to do anything to it. Bed the base if you want and then put a scope and go shooting 1/2 MOA groups at 100yards.
Also regarding the calibers the 308w with a modern 120gr-130gr bullet will hit like a 270 at the ranges anyone could accurately
hunt. 155gr TMK will give you and effective range of 1000 yards from a 20" if that is what you want for paper punching.
So I would get the short action in the venerable 308.

The savage axis and axis II are great rifles for the money. Everyone I know loves their. My one buddy's dad has one in 270 and I have seen him destroy medium sized tomatoes at 200 yards. I think he only missed once. I was impressed. The only thing bad I can say about them is that the regular axis trigger was heavy......really heavy.
I had a weatherby vanguard years ago and was impressed ontil I shot it. I would try another one for the right price, I know more now than I did back then on trouble shooting.

I hear ya, and that's exactly what my thoughts were. I shoot pistols weekly, rifles maybe every month or other month. I wanted something not shitty that I could have some fun with or hunt with so I picked up a 783 from Buds for $306 (there was a price match option) - Remington 783 W/SCP 308 22 MAT It came with a cheap scope that is fine for my needs as well.
I know it's not the best rifle ever made, but for my needs it's more than perfect. I have had a great time shooting it so far, too. No issues, feels quality, recoil is not bad at all. For the price you really can't go wrong.

If I had the extra 100+ to dump into it, I would have bought a different rifle, but that's going towards my scope. Getting there. I did a mod to the spring/trigger. Huge difference.

BTW, @hurwitzmm Field and Stream is still running a promotion in conjunction w/ Savage right now, they apparently sell a Dick's/F&S only 11VT rifle, which is on sale right now for $399 after a $50 mail in rebate, normally $600.

$399 for this rifle after the rebate seems like a damn good deal. Accu-trigger which I did for a few bucks, plus a better 4-12 scope, and you're already familiar with Bushnell. This is cheaper than what I'm gonna be into mine once I get my scope and rings. I'll be at about $450

Does seem like a good deal on it....usually the Dicks exclusive savages are merely a different stock or stock color. I got a good deal on a savage mkII that was dicks exclusive green stock.

You might go there but a 24" might be on the heavy side and then scope is not like the nikon even for an entry level.
So what you think you are getting extra you are not really getting it.
With the model 11 XP to be found for $430 wiht nikon scope is not worthy IMHO or forget about the scope
and the Hog hunter in 20" is a better barrel.
But the best deal is hands down the 10 FCP-SR 308 if you can get the rebate.

Thanks. I chose the 111 trophy over the vt simply due to weight. I know a heavy barrel is preferred by some, but a long barrel and heavy isn't a good thing for me. Had 2 shoulder surgeries on right shoulder due to my time in the Corps. I'm looking to join Camillus this week and try her out. Liverpool is much closer, but their site says their membership is maxed.

I think you made the right decission. A wider barrel in the 20,21 would be perfect but a 24" is not going to do you any favors and it is not
like you are going to compete wiht this.

I'd like to think that's most of us here, but I could be wrong. I'd like to take some distance shooting classes, but I don't think I'll ever see myself competitively long shooting.

I think we can do that anyway. Some of these rifles do well enough that one can practice with them plus 1/2 of the work on getting better
at shooting is study and understanding ballistics and the other 1/2 is shooting.

I was surprised to see how much the Savage 10 in this thread weighs. The OP made the right choice for sure (hunting and range use). I'm still toying with picking up the savage and not hunting with it. .308 or 6.5 creedmoor. Hmmm. What do you think if I already have a few 30 cal rifles and will reload for it?

Thumbholes are normally channeled for heavy barrels.
IMO don't buy a boyds laminated stock. They are cheap for a reason.
There is no consistency nor features so in order to make them work you need to put a lot of work into them anyway.
One stock that is affordable that stands out over all others is the Bell & Carlson.
If you like wood with the thumbhole inexpensive eabco carries one pillar bedded ... Savage Laminated Thumbhole Stock for Detachable Mag Rifles by Revolution | Keystone Savage Aftermarket Stocks
But you will find wood ones in ebay and other places with pillars and can be bedded too including the wood factory savage that are better than
the boyds.
After all of your help...and the wonderful response...and my purchase....I have to sell the rifle. I have 2 major surgeries that I need to have and had NO clue something was wrong.
At least I haven't shot it yet.
