That's my struggle.....I don't need a rocket ship, however I don't want a POS. I would shoot this occasionally, maybe hunt 1x a year.
Found a howa (used) 380 with bi-pod for ~530 shipped. Thoughts?
I hear ya, and that's exactly what my thoughts were. I shoot pistols weekly, rifles maybe every month or other month. I wanted something not shitty that I could have some fun with or hunt with so I picked up a 783 from Buds for $306 (there was a price match option) - Remington 783 W/SCP 308 22 MAT It came with a cheap scope that is fine for my needs as well. That's my struggle.....I don't need a rocket ship, however I don't want a POS. The only thing bad I can say about them is that the regular axis trigger was heavy......really heavy.
Luckily, there's a fix for that
Well I just got off the phone with savage. The gun is a dicks only exclusive. Here's the specs:
-24" heavy barrel
-9:1 twist
-accutrigger
-black synthetic stock (not accustock)
-4-12x40 bushnell scope
$599
BTW, @hurwitzmm Field and Stream is still running a promotion in conjunction w/ Savage right now, they apparently sell a Dick's/F&S only 11VT rifle, which is on sale right now for $399 after a $50 mail in rebate, normally $600.
Took me some digging to figure out that it's a special edition for the stores, so you won't find any info on the Savage website, but I did manage to find this on another forum:
The members on that forum who bought it seemed to enjoy it. If you haven't bought yours yet, might wanna take a look, if they have any.
Unfortunately Dicks website still has it for 549.
Thanks. I chose the 111 trophy over the vt simply due to weight. I know a heavy barrel is preferred by some, but a long barrel and heavy isn't a good thing for me. Had 2 shoulder surgeries on right shoulder due to my time in the Corps. I'm looking to join Camillus this week and try her out. Liverpool is much closer, but their site says their membership is maxed.
it is not
like you are going to compete wiht this.
I think we can do that anyway. Some of these rifles do well enough that one can practice with them plus 1/2 of the work on getting betterI'd like to think that's most of us here, but I could be wrong. I'd like to take some distance shooting classes, but I don't think I'll ever see myself competitively long shooting.
Correct.So...question...since this is a bolt action, none of the restrictions apply right? (Pistol grip/this thumbhole stock and all that)?
I was surprised to see how much the Savage 10 in this thread weighs. The OP made the right choice for sure (hunting and range use). I'm still toying with picking up the savage and not hunting with it. .308 or 6.5 creedmoor. Hmmm. What do you think if I already have a few 30 cal rifles and will reload for it?I think you made the right decission. A wider barrel in the 20,21 would be perfect but a 24" is not going to do you any favors and it is not
like you are going to compete wiht this.
Yeah, I'm liking the Boyd's thumbhole stock and an interesting 10rd mag made from a G3. Might have a project coming up soon for fun
