New shooter trying to navigate the NYC laws regarding ammo

There is no argument. First off they can;t transport weapons into NJ. Second, they can;t take the gun out of the house. Third, you have to either ship ammo to your ffl in bulk, or buy off the shelf. You can't get NYS ammo card as a private citizen to purchase ammo. Here is what the process is ...in actuality its worse than this.

I’m quite familiar with the rules. Again, none of that matters. You said he couldn’t get a permit. He can. That’s it. You added all the other statements after the fact.

OP, if you get a NYC permit and your own firearm, you’d never have to shoot in NJ, but if you wanted to, I’ve never ben to or heard of any of the ranges checking permits. For years I shot in Bayonne. I was never asked once.

@Stratocaster cant quote you because you responded within another quote but believe FUAC just changed law regarding NYC premises permit and transportation outside NYC. Also believe you have always been able to transport handgun within NJ for target shooting provided its transported following federal rules.

Ny state laws suck enough I don't have the time or inclination to try to learn NYCs laws or what is different about them. I just know enough to never ever ever go there. Ever.

Do you have a NY pistol license or just rent from range in NJ?

Can you not have ammo in NYC? What do people on long island do?

Maybe look into going to a PA range? I'm sure PA is far more lenient.

So the Nj range has specific rules for NYC residents regarding ammo? That sounds very strange.

You can always get deliberately arrested and try to get your case to the SCOTUS

I’m sure the range as specific rules as to ammo with its rental guns. Ammo is in part how they make their money .

NJ has a permit loophole for premises possession and transport to the range if unloaded in a locked box with no stops in between

No I think I said pretty plainly I’m looking for a legal work around. I’m asking how I can legally purchase my own ammo and legally bring it to the range.

Legal "work around" is saying you want to know how to do something outside what the law allows, ie, unlawful, ie, criminal. Is good stuff!

Otherwise there are some good suggestions! I'll add one that you should consider:

Shooting is not a poor man's sport! Like many of life's luxuries, you gotta "PAY" to "PLAY"...

Get used to it, or find another hobby fast or you'll be disappointed! Guns, ammo, cleaning, accessories, holsters, safes, training, etc., etc., all add up! And fast!

There is no quick fix work around. You must know applicable laws and comply with those laws, period.

And coming online as a newbie asking how to skirt the law is pretty funny... I'm actually surprised you got so many legit answers and not just flamed.

My friend and I recently started shooting handguns. We're both hooked but we're having some issues working thru all of the laws and restrictions around buying our own ammo online.

We live in NYC, we shoot in NJ. We don't have any licenses or permits. We are trying to figure out how to buy our own ammo instead of paying for the expensive ammo at the range. I'm hoping there is some kind of legal work-around that someone might be aware of.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Trying to buy ammo online & get it delivered to your "NYC" address is going to be difficult. Many/most online ammo retailers will not ship to a "NYC resident address". even if you were able to find someone that will ship to your NYC address. NYC rule/fire code only allows you to have 200rds (in total) at your residence (by the time you add the cost of item and shipping are you really saving?)

Additionally, all NY big box stores and some LGS will not sell handgun ammo to you if you do not posses a handgun license.

That is true.

When Dicks in Long Island sold handgun ammo they refused to sell to LEOs because they didn’t have a permit.

And the NYC rules on ammo seem very complicated. Another poster on another site broke it down.

The fire code against ammo seems to depend on what kind of building it is. As it was explained, a normal house might be limited to that but an apartment in the projects doesn’t have that restriction- go figure.
