New William Forstchen book

I just found out that there is a new release Dr. William Forstchen book "48 hours".

The premise is the government receives 48 hours notice of a massive CME that will wipe out the grid, and all the resulting deliberations, emergency decisions, public disclosure, what to do, resource allocation.

It sounds awesome. I have a copy reserved at te Erie county library that I will pickup today or tomorrow.

Check out the movie "knowing" It may not have been based on that specific book, but it's the same premise (like some others)

I read "48 Hours", and I thought it sucked. I guess I was expecting another "One Second After." It's a pre-apocalyptic novel, since the cataclysm occurs in the last few pages of the novel. I thought the characterization was poor, and the pacing felt slow, even though it all occurs during a 48 hour period, Forstchen spends a lot of time pondering on morality and mortality. I've read "One Second After" many times since it was first publicized, I won't be reading "48 Hours" again.

It's totally different from the one second after series. Different setting, characters, plot, timeline etc.


It's not so much a prepper type book although there are parts that get a little into prepping but it's certainly not the main plot.

There are multiple story lines occurring simultaneously during the 48 hours the book takes place in. I would have liked to have been over a longer time period to understand the characters more deeply.

I think it's a really interesting premise on what would people do and how would they conduct thenselves knowing they are potentially going to be facing a potential extinction level event that they have no control over.

I was thoroughly pleased to see what I would consider an accurate portrayal of the minions of government bureaucrats and political insiders and their entitlement mentality. I definitely agree with the idea that in a major emergency the government is more likely to be a threat than a righteous help.

If you are interested in human behavior, dystopian worlds or wvents I think you would like the book.

I don't think the ending was written to lead to a sequel but I think one can definitely pick up where this ended.


I'll leave with this. It's not as far fetched as you may think. It absolutely can happen and almost did in 2012

Definitely wouldn't say it's a feel good story it has some inspiration and some dark depressing circumstances. It's a mix of everything. I still find myself drifting back reflecting on some of the plot and actions.

You will be entertained. It's a good book. Definitely worth a read.

One second after is one of my all time favorites. I still need to read the last 2 books in the going home series too.

Oh absolutely, the scene at the beginning in the pharmacy especially hit home for me. People complain if we have to order something next day for them.. if there is a sudden loss of logistics a lot of people are going to have issues. Not just insulin-dependent, but people on narcotics and psych meds will start going into withdrawals. So many people wait until the last minute to order, very few people keep an extra amount for emergencies. (granted that is more difficult to do now with narcotics thanks to state laws) I think it was under-played in the book.. I could argue it would be as bad, if not worse, than raids for food.

I also like the fact the book challenges the assumption you will just be able to hunt your food. Several times it mentions the scarcity of game after everyone is hunting 24/7 365. He obviously did a lot of research and covers a broad range of what realities would be right down to the mention of the types of personal firearms that would come out of hiding

Conventional thought was always everyone thinks they will head for the hills or forests and live off the land. That doesn't work when everyone does the same thing and no one practices game management. Wildlife gets scarce very quick.

Very well thought out.

The nursing home scene and drug store scenes really got me hooked on this genre and are what made all of this click in my head to where I realized how fragile things are that most do not comprehend.

Everything from disease, starving, dying of carbon monoxide poisoning from bad homemade wood stoves, deciding whether to eat livestock or save it for breeding the next season, trying to maintain law and order, dealing with roving bandits, refugees, organized gangs etc...

I thought it was very plausible, realistic and well thought out.

I think there are solar powered generators and coolers. Might cost a few hundred but sounds like it might be a nice insurance policy to have just in case.

If you stock up insulin and have a method to keep it stable and tenperature regulated it would be invaluable.
