New York Gov. Hochul Signs Law Restricting Cryptocurrency Mining Over ‘Environmental Concerns’​

The bill was signed on Tuesday after being passed by the state legislature back in June.

“I will ensure that New York continues to be the center of financial innovation, while also taking important steps to prioritize the protection of our environment,” Hochul said in a statement.
The law also requires the Department of Environmental Conservation to asses how cryptomining affects the state’s ability to meet its climate goals,” the report continues. “Environmentalists said New York was undermining those goals by letting cryptomining operations run their own natural gas-burning power plants.”
“Cryptocurrency mining requires specialized computers that consume large amounts of energy. One study calculated that as of November 2018, bitcoin’s annual electricity consumption was comparable to Hong Kong’s in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration,” the AP report noted.

There are a few big ones around that everyone knows about. Also people will claim it on their taxes at times, but generally the government isn’t that smart to connect that dot. There’s a big one in niagara county and everyone knows it’s there. They use hugs amounts of energy and they make an odd humming noise.
I just have one question and that is will hochul stop using that helicopter so frequently to return to Buffalo? How about photo ops and campaign stops or does the earth not care about those?

What they're doing is using large generators fueled by Natural Gas (which produces very little emissions) to power the crypto-mining computers.
If you have a $50K a month Electric Bill, it makes sense to have a 50KW Generator on site... sure it's more of a hassle, but when you cut the cost from the Utility Company and/or potential losses from grid failures, it works out in the end.
We had a huge Saw Mill here that finally told Niagara-Mohawk (now National Grid) to FOAD, bought a big ass CAT Gen-set and cut their electric cost by more than half.
Hochul & co are sticking their noses into it because they aren't getting a cut by using the DEC under the guise of pollution but will fail as the NG Engines produce no more emissions than a NG powered Bus.
