New York poised to crack down on hunters with suspended licenses

I think everyone who goes hunting, fishing, or trapping should have the appropriate license. However, I can't help but think this is just another effort to make life difficult for outdoorsmen generally and gun owners specifically.

Surprised he didn't make it a felony like everything else he does. The way I see it, hunting/fishing with a suspended license is/should be the same as doing said activities with no license and should be treated as such.

To hunt in Long Island you are required to use a crossbow only(not sure how that is more safe...) so I wouldn't be surprised if they gets forced statewide at some point.

I disagree. Why should we need to pay the state to go hunting?

Pretty soon the state will have to pay us to shoot all the nuisance animals.

The reason I believe in it is that the fees from the licenses go to help pay for scientific research and land conservation efforts by DEC. Without that wildlife populations would be less than they are now and there would be less opportunities to go hunting/fishing.

Why should we need to pay the state to go hunting? Last year New York was awarded $28,682,525 in the annual funding to state wildlife agencies from revenue generated by the historic Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration acts.

What's a "suspended" hunting license.

I believe that is one of the possible sentences available to the judge if a landowner presses charges against a trespasser/poacher.

If all my license fees are used to help pay the ECO and DEC officers I'm fine with it. I'd love for them to catch the individual(s) who stole 4 of my game cameras over the winter.....and my neighbor's brushhog.

It’s different because you have to earn a suspension somehow, meaning an improper act as already occurred. It’s the same with unlicensed operator (ticket) and suspended driving license (arrest).

Years ago we had a huge illegal hunting and poaching issue on our land.
We have 600 acres and its difficult to keep an eye on all of it.
We had people break in our cabin and burn 2 bunk beds in the fireplace. Even though the woods are covered in dead, dry wood.
They used all our cast iron pans but did not clean them and they rusted. They stole sleeping bags, laterns, food and several other things.
In the woods they used corn and apples to attract deer. We would find carcasses stripped of meat all year around.
I did catch a couple guys using the cabin but I do not believe they were the ones who stole stuff.
Anyways, we ended up calling the DEC thinking they probably wouldnt do much, but we were at a loss.
In fact, they came with several guys and put cameras all over our property.
Eventually they caught some Amish guys and a couple other non Amish.
The problem came after that.
For the next year I found DEC officers on our property all the time without our knowledge.
They said we didnt really have a choice because it was an open investigation.
It took awhile but we finally got them to stay away with a judges order.
I will never call them again for anything.
I dont dislike them and I believe they do a good service and are needed but there has to be a limit.
Ive talked to a couple of the DEC guys and they have no animosity towards me, they were just following orders.
They did a great job of dealing with the poachers but just wouldnt go away.

That is the excuse they use now. They have an excess of monies to give to the illegals and the habitual dole abusers. They could use a fraction of that money.

Licenses are only about making money for the govt. period.

Hunting and fishing license sales have declined severely in the last 50,40, 30 years. But the funding stays the same? The DEC workers get paid etc etc. they get the money from someplace.....it is not funded from the licenses. That money adds up to a pittance.........
