NY Assembly: No free college tuition for Gold Star families

New York lawmakers on Tuesday refused to advance a bill that would have provided free college tuition to the families of military personnel from the state who were killed in the line of duty.

The Assembly’s Higher Education Committee voted 15 to 11 to hold the bipartisan bill, effectively ending its chances of making it to a floor vote this session.

Why should gold star families, or anyone else for that matter, get free tuition?

I get that there are dozens of safety net programs out there, but I see little validity in any of them and adding one more program doesnt do anything but take more out of our pockets.

It's not charity if its mandated.

I personally say FU to anyone who thinks I should be forced to pay for their shit.

We owe gold star families anything we can reasonably give them. They have sacrificed for us and their family units are forever shattered And they have lost financial earning power defending us. As far as I'm concerned we can't give them enough.


But F illegals who come here expecting handouts snd free shit. Not my problem.

I get that "the troops" are an issue that a lot of us care about, however using tax dollars for this is no different than forcing omni-sex bathrooms, demanding that I bake you a cake, or funding parades - be they veterans day, pride day or Christmas day.

Theft comes in all shapes and sizes. But it's still theft.

Gold star families did not really sacrifice. The dead Service member sacrificed. I do not believe these families should get free college educations.

I am glad this is not going forward. Very glad it was stopped. Hopefully it will never make it to a full vote and I hope if it does, it is not passed. I do not want to pay for the families of a fallen Soldier.

I also do not think that these illegal vermin should get free anything.

I will remind for anyone who does not know... I served happily and freely for 25 years. From day one, way back in 1990, as a young man, I knew EXACTLY what I signed up for and I knew what the possibilities could be.

Every time I re-enlisted, I knew what I was possibly in for. Never once did I think that if I fell, my family would be taken care of. The ultimate sacrifice is only made by the fallen, not the family member survivors.

While I understand your point of view and feel the same way I also believe that if we (taxpayers) are forced to pay for illegals then we should be able to scrape up enough money to pay tuition for peoples kids that actually CONTRIBUTED something to this country!
I'd be happier if we didn't have to pay for any of that shit!

Regardless of my position on this type of “handout”, it’s absurd to analogize it with the things you mention above. Absolutely absurd.

I see it as a handout. Period. I specifically chose ones that I figured most here would be OK with doing away with. Absurd? Yes. But IMO they all are.
