New York's per pupil spending is almost double the national average of $11,392. It's more than three times as much as Utah's per pupil spending average. At $6,575 per student, Utah has the lowest rate.
Education spending went up across the country by 3.5 percent from 2014 to 2015. Total education expenses were $639.5 billion in 2015. The increase year over year was one of the largest in recent years, according to a press release from the Census Bureau.
Of the $21,206 per student spent each year in New York, $8,758 goes toward instruction, or teacher salaries. That's the highest number in the nation.
