If a gun sits buried in the woods, or locked in a safe it does nothing to strengthen our rights. Sure, we would have them if civil war broke out, but they would have to stay hidden because if you go to a range, or get ratted out by an ex, a crazy neighbor, or discuss it on a forum and you cant provide proof of insurance then youre toast.

In addition, the exemption for police and peace officers makes this law suspect on equal protection grounds (a challenge that has not yet been brought more broadly under Article 265/400).

As an aside, the law does not exempt retired police from the insurance requirement. Expect that to change.

But as I've said in other posts, Albany is going to grant every fantastical dream law to the Brady folks and this is on that list.
