NG whole house generator to gas

anyone have a NG generator that is set up to quickly shift to gasoline if the lines went down?

I converted my 5K portable to propane. It will run on either propane or gasoline.

Whole house, automatic generators are nice but expensive. Usually way more than what you "need".

My greatest concern is getting my gas furnace converted to a plug so I can plug into the generator.
Saw that was pretty easy.

I put in a small transfer panel. Plug in the generator, start it, and flip the switch. It runs the fridge, freezer, water heater, boiler, a few lights and outlets. I'm on town water so no well pump to worry about. I heat with oil, but have two propane logsets that will heat the entire house without electricity. Cooking and hot water also propane. I have 50 gallons of propane reserved just for the generator. It will use about 1 gallon per hour. Two 275 gallon oil tanks that will last me about 1 1/2 years. I have a 250 gallon tank for the house gas although if I could dig a hole big enough in this rock, I'd put in a 1000 underground.

Generator will run on 20# BBQ, but I usually use a 30# if I'm taking it anywhere.

I have a 8500 watt portable that runs on propane or gas,I dont ever plan to put gasoline into it.The connection for the gen is wired to a breaker in my panel that is shut off normally.In case of an outage I just turn the main incoming breaker off and turn the gen breaker on.8500 watts will run everything I need and then some.I've got 2 20 lb BBQ tanks for the gen.According to the manual I should get about 8hrs per tank.

I have a Generac 7550 EXL I thought of converting. I went to the link you provided but when I put everything in the drop down it comes back 404 Not found.

Ive got a 11,000 kw Generac but its rated at 10,000 with NG, which is how its hooked up now. 11,000 with LP.
I cannot let the electricity go out, it would be bad.
Its set up for NG but can easily be converted to LP. I have a 400 gallon LP tank on the property but the NG will keep flowing in an outage.

So...I dont have a propane gen, but, I do have an 8500w Briggs and Stratton gas generator that I bought at Home Dumpo right before Hirricane Sandy hit. Good thing, too...I was without power for a week. That sucker pretty much ran my entire house! TV, HEAT, Electric Stove, Boiler, and quite a few outlets, etc...so, I was good! Also came in handy when we had that wicked snow storm a number of years ago on Haloween. 9 days, no freakin' power! But that generator was kickin' ass at ol' Chris' house! Even had my next door neighbors stay with me for a couple days, so they could stay warm, eat, shower, and it helped them save a ton of $$$ instead of getting a hotel room for 2 weeks. My house was just about the only house on Main Street that had lights, and power. That generator has proven to be a life saver. And I usually keep 10 to 15 gallons of gas in the garage, at any given time during the colder months....mainly for the snowblower, but.....ya' never know!

At home have a multifuel inverter generator. Runs key items.


At the cabin we have a small solar array and a modest LiFePO4 battery system. Think enough to run lights, a small fridge, and pumps for a little bit every day. For heat there we have a wood stove and a small diesel heater as a "oh shit" heater.

I did research on generators till my eyes hurt. Ended up going to a diesel that powers the whole house and outbuildings. I ultimately planned around long term SHTF outage situation.

I had a 4500 w portable that used propane. Was able to power everything but the electric water heater and the electric oven. Got tired of dragging it out and firing it up, especially since most outages here are short, couple hours at the most. Had a standby installed, 14k w Kohler, way more than I need but since I was financing it anyways I went for the big one. Much quieter than the portable. In the 2 years I've had it only needed it a handfull of times, mostly 1 to 3 hrs but once the outage lasted about 18 hrs. Well worth the investment.
EDIT: The one I had at home was 8500 w not 4500, the one at the lake for our bar is 4500.

I bought my portable 7500w Coleman gas generator back in 2008. At the time I was keeping multiple saltwater reef aquariums as a business. I needed the protection from an outage.

I never had to use it UNTIL 2011. That's when we had the mother of all storms and subsequent outage. Super Storm Sandy hit us bad. We were without electric, internet, and cable for 11 days straight.

Because of the reef aquariums I had to run that generator every second of those 11 days. I ran out to buy gas 25 miles each way, every single day. There was no finding any 5 gallon gas cans at any store, anywhere. HD, Lowes, Walmart, TSC, AutoZone, K-Mart, nobody had them.

I was stuck with the three 5g cans I had on hand. That generator ran hard, but it ran. We are on well water. So that needed to be monitored. When we wanted to run water and the well pump called for water, we would shut down the refrigerator. Never so much as a hiccup. That gen paid for itself during that one power outage.

Since then we've only had to use it a few times. And never for more than an hour or two at most.

We have our solar up and running now.

I have 13kw of panels on the roof, and a 20kwh lead acid battery bank.

The whole house runs through the twin sol-ark 12k inverters for use as a transfer switch.

In an extended power outage we would need to conserve power a little, but nothing drastic.

I.e. don't use the dishwasher, or washing machine. Probably set the thermostat for the AC at 85 instead of 75 if it's summer. Use the oven and stove sparingly.

If I need to weld something with the big welder when on backup power I'd probably turn off the breaker for the AC and the hot water heater while I'm doing it.

Probably not necessary if I'm just using the little 120v MIG.

Going to add a 3rd sol-ark and 2 more strings of panels eventually. But right now we're selling more power than we're buying. So we'd fair pretty well.

I do have a harbor freight 8kw generator, and I picked up the parts to add it as a backup to the sol-arks. They can auto-start it if the batteries get low.

Best part is it kicks from utility to battery so smoothly that you don't even need to fix the clock on the microwave. There is a slight flicker in the lights when it cuts over, but that's it.

I don't even think about the generator until around day 4, which doesn't happen but rarely. Feels much better having one though.
