The Niagara County Legislature this week urged Congress to pass the Second Amendment Guarantee Act and limit states' abilities to restrict rifle and shotgun sales.
SAGA, introduced in late July by U.S. Rep. Chris Collins, R-Clarence, takes aim at provisions of the New York SAFE Act. The bill would prevent states from imposing regulations on rifles, shotguns and components such as detachable magazines "in an amount greater than is provided under Federal law."
The legislature's resolution states the SAFE Act "abridges the rights of law-abiding citizens," and notes Niagara County formally opposed the act in February of 2013, about a month after its passage by the New York legislature.
Local lawmakers OK'd the message to Congress by a unanimous vote Tuesday.
Collins' bill was referred to the House judiciary committee in late July, and then to the subcommittee on crime, terrorism, homeland security and investigations on Sept. 6, according to a Collins spokesman.
