A friend was just telling me about a month ago NY passed a law that you can’t paint your gun.

It's this: NY State Assembly Bill A8736
You can paint it but it has to be camo intended for hunting. Also, don't paint it with the intention of selling it. Gun also needs to be concealable on your person so rifles and shotguns, while specifically called out in the legislation, should be okay?
Might have a first amendment claim if you put the right stuff on it... cross, flags, etc.? Good luck with that in NY though unless you choose a rainbow flag and the hammer and sickle.

Well, there's a law worth less than the pixels I read it on. Good luck getting it enforced.
You can't Paint "Toy" guns to make them appear real....It would seem Darwin Award Candidates will take an Airsoft or other non-gun and cover the Red/Orange Muzzle so they can be all gangster, until they pull it on a Cop, can't make a live gun appear as a Toy either. (Unless I'm mistaken)

Well criminals probably do that too but the law is specifically about painting real guns to look like toys.

What about my airsoft G26 ? I didn't paint the orange tip when I got it. I unpainted it. A little nail polish remover and you have to be careful not to mix it up with my real one now (the select fire lever is a dead giveaway though)

Is a zebra stripe pattern camoflage ? What about tiger stripes ? Cheetah print ? Diamondback rattlesnake print ? What if you paint it all flat black ?
My point is, almost any color and pattern found in nature could be considered camoflage.
I have absolutely no idea what problem this is supposed to solve, other than the off chance someone somehow makes their gun look convinceingly like a "super soaker " or some other toy. I have no explaination as to what difference it makes if you paint your AK zombie appocolypse green or if you turn it purple, or put a flag on it. I can ALMOST understand it if it only applied to handguns. Making your PPK look like a squirt gun could be a problem, but the people that would do such a thing and use it to commit a crime aren't going to be deterred by this law.
The law says if it was originally sold that way, then it's fine. Therefore, if it came from the manufacturer as a pink zebra it's ok. Silly, but ok. But, if YOU paint it pink zebra, it's NOT ok.

If I want a pink, white and black gun I'll paint it that way. I'll tell the cop I'm hunting Good-N-Plenty's ! (For those too young to understand, Good-N-Plenty's are a black licorice with white and pink candy coating)

I haven't read the Law since it was proposed, so I have zero expertise. I do believe it was an attempt to keep little Thug wanna-be's from getting their cranium ventilated from pulling a "gun" on a Cop or someone that don't play dat.
NY is very much a Nanny State and some narcissistic con-man (usually from NYC) wants his name memorialized on some piece of Legislation designed to feel good.
