I don't hunt, so although this is old news, I just became aware of it.

New York used to ban hunting big game on Sunday. Opening day of big game season was always on a Monday, and doe tags were not issued to a single person but rather to a group, and even then were not issued in great numbers.
The true conservationists finally got the state to understand that deer management through hunting is the best way to control the deer population and the health of it. Then the state figured out how much $$$ they could get from sportsmen, and opened sunday hunting. Twenty-some years after that, they began to allow the use of pistols and then even rifles in certain areas.

The old timers at my camp still complain about deer opening day being moved from Monday to Saturdays (it wasn't that long ago, I remember Monday openers). Their main complaint is that now the weekend warriors who aren't really putting the work and time into hunting get to enjoy the opener.
...but in the same breath, they complain about how there's so much less shooting on opening day now, meaning the deer aren't moving like they used to.
These are the same old timers who complain about there being so much less small game nowadays... and as proof, they will regale you with stories from back in the day when they used to fill their bag limit multiple times per day.
Old timers are awesome in their blatant and unapologetic hypocrisy

I remember when hunting season was a much shorter block of time, a month or so for archery and a month for gun season. Now we have an unrelenting block of time from October 1st ( earlier in the western part of the state ) through the end of January, where access to the publicly owned woodlands are essentially denied anyone who wants to use them for any other purpose.

Sounds like you have a bunch of old curmudgeons in your camp. I'm an old timer and I didnt like the change from Monday to Saturday, but not for the reasons you stated. I grew up with Monday being opening day and to me its just a tradition type thing. When it was on Monday, most upstate schools were closed, it was basically a holiday. Yes, there is a lot less shooting these days, nothing to do with the Saturday opener there are just so many less hunters. That is also the reason the seasons/limits have been expanded.

Not sure where you are, but opening morning in 7R is a war zone, mostly before legal light I might add, then things simmer down to a dull roar till 8 or 9. then sporadic. From my perch on top of the mountain i can hear miles in any direction.

I barely hear shots near me. I hear maybe 4-5 on opening day and plenty are far away.

how can we hunt this year when the Witch in charge says every ware is a Sensitive Place
not to mention you need more permission slips from the land you hunt on ..
and you need a fire proof box /safe in your auto to transport your gun to where you go hunt ..
i still haven't got my tags yet .. this is a first .. I'm at the Town Clerks office ASAP normally ...
maybe wen i wake up .. i hit the town clerks office .... will i go out hunting this year .. time will tell ..

If the entire state decided not to get a hunting license as a form of protest for her anti-gun legislation, Hochul would rejoice, and so would the purple tie jackboots. Hochul would get in front of a camera and tell the world how there won't be anyone falling out of a treestand, no dogs, horses, goats, or cows will get killed by accident, and how no-one will get shot because they were the victim of some idiot that "thought they were a deer". She would go on about how no guns were going to be stolen out of a car while the owner was inside a restaurant. She would dismiss the amount of revenue the sale of licenses brought to the state, and would gloss over the fact that the purchase of guns, ammo, clothing, and everything else related to hunting supplies the state with tax revenue. Her purple tie minions would be happy because they would get paid overtime to bait and shoot deer at night with a supressed rifle. None of the meat would make its way to food pantries, it would all be left to rot, but who cares ? They would also have the fun of going after anyone that hunts without a license, making felons out of some guy just trying to feed his family in rough economic times.
