This now sounds like a real compromise: Something that the Left wants with "Fix NICS" and something Conservatives want with National Reciprocity.

As we learned years ago: Compromise is when neither side gets everything they want. So...let's try this.

If Liberals don't vote for this, we can always shout to the Left, "Hey...you're guys voted against expanding background checks." We were willing to go along with that compromise. But from now on...NOTHING!

I am trying to see these Bills through pretty open eyes.

First, why does the NICs need to be fixed? Is it not already against the law for agencies not to submit all information?

Second, how does Reciprocity make the world a less safe place?

Fix Nics imposes penalties on agencies that don't report. It gives funding to small agencies that don't have the manpower to report. Otherwise, without it, there are no penalities for failure to report.

I agree with you. But, NICS isn't realistically going anywhere. "Fix NICS" does little else but direct the government to follow the law and provides funding for additional manpower to improve compliance from smaller agencies. If I have to accept that in order to get national reciprocity passed, I'm willing to strongly consider that deal.

I would. It's a no-brainer for me. It's one step back followed by ten steps forward.

To can the whole thing is no steps forward and possibly 10 steps back since reciprocity will never be attempted ever again anytime soon and if attempted again, it won't have provisions in it that protect the gun, magazine, and ammo rendering parts of the unsafe act void, along with the ability to carry in State with an out of state permit rendering the Sullivan Act void, and language in it that imposes penalties on states that refuse to acknowledge it.

There it is. It only requires that the law already there be followed with incentives to do so.
Not a big deal with one exception. The NICS delayed sale of a firearm.

If the NICS system doesn’t give a yes or no in three days, it requires that the FFL report the sale to LE if the sale is completed. So if the FFL doesn’t sell it and hand the gun over to the buyer, then no reporting.

That is the only real change as far as we should be concerned.

The positive far outweighs the negative in this bill. Most of it is already law. And all of it that would deny gun ownership is already law.
