Firstly, what matters is where I put my head down at night to sleep / keep my belongings. If I move to PA, and commute into NYC periodically, it's none of their business -- assuming I wanted to put myself through that helish commute.

My father has a wealthy friend and he said nys goes as far with determining residency as to checking on where your burial plot is. If your burial plot is in nys they still consider you at least partial resident or something like that. Not sure how true it is, but the guys pretty loaded so I’d think he knows what he’s talking about.

Well once you're in another state, they can suck it. If the other state considers you a resident, then NYS has no jurisdiction and no enforcement power to do shit about it. If you're super concerned, open a bank account with a bank that is local to another state, which further makes NYS powerless to do shit about it.
