Hello everyone, sorry if this is a repost but I've been reading conflicting statements. Can someone definitively tell me whether NY Compliant AK47 are legal in NY or not? I recently tried purchasing one online and was going to ship to an FFL near me and they (the FFL) told me that they do no accept AK47s (NY Compliant or not) when I asked whether it was legal to have one or not, they said they dont know.... thanks in advance.

Which FFL? South Shore Sportsman is a very gun-friendly shop. Sad that I feel the need to label a gun store as “gun friendly” but in our area, that’s not always the case.

@Airborneguy interestingly enough, thats the FFL i called lol not to bad mouth them or anything, ive purchased from them in the past and they were great, they are probably being conservative as someone has mentioned.

Not to hijack this thread but does anybody have any experience with these Gen III thorsden stocks on the AK:

TBH purely on looks I think they look better on the AR, but I have a thing for com bloc weapons. Sort of curious as to whether or not these stocks are comfortable and practical.

I went into a local NY "gun shop" a couple years ago.
He had guns but I didnt see any MSRs.
I asked the guy if he sells any NY compliant ARs or AKs.
He said, " I aint getting into that shit".
I should have known from all the duck decoys and camo shotguns that he was a FUDD.
Seriously, every single item in his shop was hunting related. Tons of shotguns, bolt action 30-06s and higher caliber revolvers but very few semi auto pistols.
I heard recently hes only open by appointment anymore
Oh, and he also had a sign that said, "transfers for loyal customers only".

Lee Armory is a manufacturer of AKs that has has sold them to NYGF members in the past, in compliant configurations. I believe they still make them, but not as often.The configs they use are:
- No threads on the barrel to support silencers or other muzzle devices.
- Bayonet lugs are ground down to the point that a bayonet won't hold on. (IE, removed on their end)
- Pistol grip is replaced with an AR > AK adapter + standard AR-15 spur on that, which tons of ARs do have currently as part of "featureless" configurations.
- Standard, non-folding stock. (normally wood)
- (Obviously) semi-auto only. In fact, they only use semi-auto capable safeties / fire selectors because of how they're notched.
- Ships typically with a 10 round magpul pmag for 7.62x39.

It could be that the FFL sells them/ can get them for a profit and doesn't want to do a "transfer" for you. Some FFL's refuse to do a new gun transfer when they sell the same gun, because there is no profit in it for them in a transfer.
Or maybe that FFL doesn't want to deal with the compliance issues. Either way, I think that FFL is giving you BS and I would use a different FFL.

Generally I buy my carry pistols from one place to give them the business, and the same FFL will then do my ammo receiving and long gun transfers since they know I’m a customer. Builds a relationship.
@libertysnake I pmed Lee armory yesterday asking if I can purchase one from them but till now no response.
@mak00 they didnt have any NY compliant AKs for sale. Probably they just didnt want to deal with compliance issues.
UPDATE: I called another FFL (dark storm) and they said as long as its NY compliant I can ship it to them and they will do the transfer. Thanks for all the help guys!

Another vote for the Saiga Sporter. I love mine. And it considerably more ergonomic than any gimped AK.
Again saigas are not that easy to come by any more let alone for a decent price. They have been banned from import for something like 4 or 5 years now I think
