Income tax, county tax, town tax, school tax, sales tax, gas tax, cell phone tax, alcohol tax, utility bill tax, .....I am certain I am missing a lot, but those are just some of the taxes I pay. And to think what the colonist faught a war of Independence over....

Well, there really isn't anything to think about... SOMEONE has to PAY for all the pet projects and liberal programs...

Get OUT while you can. State will be Bankrupt very soon and the Federal well will be dry too! Then you might as well move to Venezuela, lol

NYS will never be bankrupt. To many fools live here that will gladly take it up the ass because they are to stupid to know any better.
But some of us, that love where we live, been here all our lives, are being forced to move out by way of elite ignorance and taxation.

Last I checked, Broome County had the worst property-tax-to-home-value ratio in the country.

That makes my county #1 of the #1 state.

They'd be wrong, though. Note that I said property tax to home value ratio.

TaxChester has the highest median property taxes in the nation, but the county also has houses that are worth a lot of money. Broome, on the other hand, has high taxes and homes that aren't worth shit. The net result is that Broome County residents pay a higher property tax rate than those in TaxChester.

The actual numbers are as follows:

Broome property tax rate as a percentage of property value: 2.43% (source)
TaxChester property tax rate as a percentage of property value: 1.62% (source)

If you think about it, it makes sense. It only costs so much for roads and police and whatnot. So if home values are higher, you can tax at a lower rate and receive the same (or more) in proceeds.

There are so many little ones that we don't notice, or don't think of as taxes.

Buy a house? The county charges $1000 to file the deed or something.

Vehicle registrations, inspections, driving licenses, pistol permits, hunting/fishing licenses, turkey stamps, doe tags, duck stamps... all taxes.

There are things that are kind of taxes, but not totally. Such as gun transfer fees. Yeah, they're going to the FFL, but it's a fee to perform a task that is mandated and controlled by the government. 18 hour training classes for pistol permits.

Then there are the indirect taxes that we all pay. All taxes levied on businesses are passed down to the consumer. When you buy a gallon of gas, there's not only the sales tax and fed/state gas tax... there's also a portion of the taxes paid to run that gas station, to register and operate the tanker that hauled in the gas, the taxes on the wages of the driver, the taxes on the gas used to run that tanker, the taxes on the refineries and refining processes, the taxes on the refinery workers, the taxes on the oil extraction process... on and on and on, all of that is paid by us at the pump.

Even if we don't count indirect taxes and kinda-not-totally taxes, the reality is that most middle class people in NYS pay more than half of their gross income to the government. I don't know what the right percentage is, but I know for damn sure that 50% is to effing high.

Your source does not address the NYS Tax equalization rate. Broome County under assesses property values across the board for nearly all entities. Only Vestal is at full value assessment. (On the other hand, 20 of Westchester municipalities are confirmed by the State to be at 100% full value asessment) The equalization rates are developed to ensure that the real estate tax burden across the State is equalized across the varying assessment processes.

Equalization rates are necessary in New York State​

  • Each municipality determines its own level of assessment (this is in contrast to most states that require one level of assessment statewide).
  • Hundreds of taxing jurisdictions - including most school districts and counties - do not share the same taxing boundaries as the cities and towns that are responsible for assessing properties

Interesting. Just doing some back-of-envelope math, it seems that this may put us more in parity with each other, or perhaps even put TaxChester in the #1 spot. I think we can certainly agree that this is a race to the bottom that we'd rather not be in, lol.
