NY Legal AK conundrum

Too put it mildly this obviously is not the greatest time, but are there any places in general that sell a fixed mag AK? Specifically something like a Wasr, Cugir, Zastava (or of that standard of quality/price range). The issue I have noticed is that the majority of suitable AKs (nothing US made receiver) are stock AKs from places that simply will not ship to NY. Assuming you can even find someone who would ship said AK to an FFL; I would need a suitable FFL who would be willing to accept it/maglock it. It is simply a predicament that I have not had with ARs as you can easily make them SAFE compliant from parts. The few NY available AKs I have found are things like LeeArmory's sporter, which seems fine quality wise, but it appears to have modified the receiver to a point of being difficult to restore to a stock maglocked configuration.

I guess long story short, has anyone been in this boat and found a solution? I am open to a 'featureless' AK if it is possible for me to compmag and restore the grip. I really don't care about the loss of functionality, this is only for range use and I want the ergonomics of the pistol grip.

Truly fixed mags are a real PITA on an AK. Even just for range use, they are not easy to reload.

I suspect this is why you don't see them commercially available (aside from bullet button like solutions that are questionably "fixed enough" for NY).

One benefit you get with a fixed AK over a fixed AR is that you don’t have the same "can't clear a malfunction" issues you get with a fixed max AR, since you can still easily disassemble the AK, even with the bolt stuck halfway back.

If you still want a fixed AK, you're best bet is probably to get a featureless AK and then fix the mag yourself and put your pistol grip back.

Yeah, fixed mags of whatever variety are obviously not really ideal. Neither is losing the pistol grip or any other features though. I figure with the removable dust cover like you said, it shouldn't be that difficult to clear jams. I am really not intending to stake my life with this, so if it is a little finicky, I am sure I would manage. I still can't find any featureless in general that aren't stuff like Riley Defense, which I wouldn't touch with a 100 foot pole.

Have you asked LeeAmory about whether they will do an AK with spur grip for you? They did, at some point, a round of AKs in a group buy for NYGF some time ago -- with Spur grips (a common compliance handgrip in NY) using an AK > AR handgrip adapter, and adding the spur.

They can probably do a spur option.

Unless you specifically wanted something with a maglock and not the 5 point compliance.

Well you have a good point, it can't hurt to ask. My end goal is a maglocked AK, so I should be able to easily convert a spur grip with an extra grip + compmag.

Your best options are a saiga, thordsen, or one company was making a saiga knock off...hmm I can't remember but it was a "hunter" model.


Any option generally will make the safety only that much more of a nightmare, and saigas are balanced really bizarrely.

You guys have put up some good suggestions and a helpful PM or two as well. The problem is generally finding someone selling a lot of these things rather than the concept at this point. If this wasn't NY there are probably 5-6x I could have easily ended up with a Zastava already. I saw the Vz58 when I trawled through Atlantic, but it is not in stock and I had my heart more set on a conventional AK if I could find it. Given the madness in the world and our infuriating laws, none of this hitches were of any surprise to me. I do have a solid lead or two though, which is something, so I appreciate all of your input.

Correct. I had two. I bought one for $320. I sold it for more than double (with a few mods).


The other one I think I paid $399.


Both were sold with bullet guides done right by me with a drill press and carefully hand tapped. I had just enough parts to keep back ends stock but the gun itself 922r complaint.

How would you compare it to the spur? I have a spur right now cause it's about as restrictive as possible for compliance / the default option for MOST people who sell NY legal AKs due to simplicity.

Still, I'm open to other options. Just sucks we have no ruling on ANY of them.

Since NY doesn't provide precise definitions, unlike even California, it's anyone's guess. The working assumption is that if the grip portion is part of the stock, a la Thordsen FRS-15, then it cannot be a pistol grip. The "proof" is that many, many of them have been sold in stores for years now and, to date, nobody has been arrested, much less prosecuted, for having one. I know of at least one rifle with this type of configuration that was brought into the NY Police during their investigation of a local FFL, and the owner was allowed to leave with it.

You can get a fixed mag VZ58 and load it with stripper clips. You can get the parts kits and receivers and a 10 round mag and find a gunsmith to put it together for you. A kit will run you about $300, a receiver $400 to $600. You will also need a 10 round double stack mag, and a suitable 14-1 RIGHT HAND muzzle device to pin and weld as the original barrels that come with most kits are 15.5". You can find 16.5" US made barrels for around $150.. Stripper clips are about $4 each for these things. CSA makes a side rail similar to an AK one and RS Regulate makes mounts for it. Assembly will vary by smith buy expect to pay $500+

I’m itching for one of these...wish I got on board when they were still making them.
