NY Rep Morelle calls for tighter security requirements for gun shops

Newly-proposed legislation could change the way gun shops operate in New York.

On Monday, Rep. Joe Morelle (D, NY-25) announced the Gun Theft Prevention Act, saying the legislation will strengthen regulations for gun shops to better protect our streets.

"Licensed gun dealers are not required to take the most basic step to ensure these dangerous weapons don't fall into the wrong hands," said Morelle. "It's negligent and it's dangerous."

The legislation includes requirements for gun shops to install basic safety precautions, including locked cabinets and video surveillance devices. Dealers that do not meet such requirements could face suspension or revocation of their license. Owners could also be sued if the stolen gun is used in a crime resulting in death.

Can't recall hearing about someone knocking over a gun shop recently. Though I do recall something about a few public servants who were entrusted with firearms leaving them on a tailgate or something like that.

There's one gun shop on the west side of Rochester (in Morelle's district) that was burglarized seven times in the last 10 years. More than 82 firearms were stolen. The most recent burglary was less than a year ago.

That shop has since been shut down.

Chappy's Guns was a shit shack. I know people with lawn mower sheds that are more secure.

Almost every decent gun shop I have visited has pretty good security.

The state is simply going to regulate LGS out of business. The cost of doing business is just going to keep increasing until legitimate businesses simply can't afford to work in the state.
