I'm sorry. Did I say that out loud? I live in Suffolk County on Long Island and have lived on LI all my life except for when I went to college in Ithaca. Due to family encumbrances, I don't foresee leaving this communist sinkhole in the near future.
I am contemplating getting some land upstate where I can shoot and hunt and do other recreational things.
I am a regular on Long Island Gun Club which is another non Canadian forum.
Other than that, I am just enjoying living behind enemy lines.

Welcome, as a fellow suffolk guy, were not as bad as NYC is pretty much all i could say. I intend to move far away once i finish up my degree.

I was just thinking the same thing a few months ago. Went as far as looking upstate for land. You can get some decent property for 20k-50k but it may or not have a road. Ideally, if I ever bought something upstate, I would want a cabin or something on it where I could rest my head. Love the idea of having my own land to shoot on and do all sorts of stupid stuff without the neighbors scratching their heads.

Most plots I have seen have road frontage and electricity at the road. If there isn't a cabin, buying a mobile home and dropping it there is an option. I think the big question is how far I want to drive. Farther is cheaper.

Welcome to the site.

Look around some more upstate, I have 15 acres and we only paid $12,000 for it with the survey and lawyers fees. Our land was unimproved, but we installed 100 amp electric service on it and put in a 36 foot camper with a 14ft slideout. Built an outhouse, boom, instant hunting camp. We truck water in by the 55 gallon drum and can take hot shower during the summer in the camper. Bought a chainsaw and have a shooting range and property filled with ATV trails. We sent a letter to the neighbor who lives in S.C. and never uses his property about hunting deer on his land and he gave us permission and only thing he wanted was us to send him a picture of any deer we shoot on his property. With his land and our land we have almost 100 acres to use.

Just going by what I saw on CraigsList and in some local papers up in Clinton County while visiting friends didn't offer much on the property, but I agree, once you get it cleared you can plant a tent there and it's a work in progress. I imagine more than 2-3 hours a way would get old quick. Have to keep that in mind when looking. Real estate is always valuable though.

Welcome, I left Smithtown in 99 for Saratoga County never looked back! Have land I can hunt and shoot on and also belong to a Gun Club 5 miles away with a indoor range and outdoor ranges! I don't miss the taxes or the traffic.

Welcome to NYGF.

The further upstate, the less expensive the land.
Down around Ulster, Sullivan and Dutchess counties land is quite expensive, $10,000 an acre in places.
Farther north you can find land for under $2,000 an acre. Look around enough and you can find 10 acres for under 10 grand.

This is of course a perfect option, its what we did.
Northeastern PA is far better than NYS, and youll find cheaper land closer to home.

I looked into PA. They have their own issues there. Hunting regs are different and close to NYC is polluted with NYC escapees with their liberal views. After doing the math, I decided to stick with upstate NYC.

The problem is that I would not have any kind of residence there where I would feel comfortable leaving firearms. I would be living on Long Island and only occasionally going there. So the option of having hi caps and unicorn killing bayonet lugs is not practical anyway.
