New York state is kicking in more than $1.5 billion in taxpayer-funded incentives for getting half of Amazon's second headquarters located in a section of Queens.

The Seattle-based company made its long-awaited announcement Tuesday, saying Long Island City and Alexandria, Virginia, will each get 25,000 jobs. The online retailer also said it will open an operations hub in Nashville, creating 5,000 jobs.

Amazon and other companies make their decisions based on factors such as access to skilled workers, transportation network, etc. The tax breaks are simply icing on the cake. A company like amazon does not need tax incentives to locate its HQ but it certainly will pit one city against another to get the best deal. The govts are stupid if they think this is a net benefit. You don't have to be a socialist bird-brain to see this. This is conventional thinking from people at national review. Finally, common ground but its too late. The deed has been done.

Anytime Amazon goes into an area, property rates quadruple within a year. The people living in that area are going to be in for sticker shock when all the rent in that area double next year.

$1.5b is a drop in the bucket compared to the costs of these kinds of subsidies across the state. The same exact thing happens for every Wal-mart, Dollar General, Wegmans, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Our counties, cities, and towns all compete to offer the best tax subsidies to draw in such businesses. The reality is, if we all just stopped doing it, the businesses would still come. They're not going to stop selling goods to people just because we make them pay their fair share of property taxes.

The bigger issue, imo, is that the public sector should not be incentivzing the private sector. Sort of like sports stadiums where cities spend millions to subsidize and the returns just aren't there. If Amazon thinks they can make a go of it then they should open. But not with taxpayer dollars.
