Reminds me of when the Ulster County Sheriff's Office used to have a policy of checking for outstanding warrants of everyone who applied for social services. Makes sense to me. But of course this is NYS (and modern day Ulster County) so that had to stop. Now anyone, gang banger or welfare queen, can apply for social services without fear or having their warrants found out. Your tax dollars at work.

No fingerprints for free handouts but I need to submit and pay for my fingerprints every 5 years to keep the hazmat on my driver license that I make a living with. Such an ass backward system but that's how democrats buy votes.

This is such BS. Now that illegals can get drivers licenses and they have no legal address they can hitch a bus ride here get a DL, sign up for gov assistance and then leave the state.

I have no problem with people choosing to help those in need but it should be done so at that level, not at the gov level of any kind. Churches used to take care of the homeless and needed. They also used to take care of orphans. I have no problem going back to that.

Some people I disagree with have at times called me a heartless conservative bastard for my stance against some of the flagrant abusers of our public welfare system.

And while I share the sentiment expressed in some respects,- particularly with respect to those abusing the system, my thoughts are tempered by the memory of my father, and how he survived growing up, and then went on to become a very productive member of our society.

His father died two months after he was born. His mother tried to raise him and his siblings during the depression with the help of Catholic Charities, and other neighbors. They got coupons for one pair of shoes at the start of school in the fall, and day old bread at the bakery, He used to scour the train tracks for coal that fell off railcars for heat.

Eventually, however, she could no longer feed him, and he was forced to leave home. He ended up in a boys home where he planted and harvested crops; repaired shoes, among other things while he was schooled.

After he graduated school, he entered the workforce, working for something like $5 / week,- when the company could afford to pay them.

In WWII, he enlisted, and became a navigator on a B-29 and flew 25 missions over Japan. He married in ‘42, came home in ‘46, went to school on the GI bill, graduating 2nd in a class of over 500 as a mechanical engineer.

He raised a family of three children while working full time until he was 91. And he gave generously to all charities, and anonymously to countless people he ran across in life who were less fortunate than him, and struggling. He asked for nothing in return, and was happy just to enjoy every day.

He was the kindest and humblest man I ever knew, and I had the privilege to work at his side for 40 years. He was my mentor and close friend until his last breath at 95.

I try to follow his example and do nice things for people I see in need, but I am not as good a man as he was. And when I see people abusing the system, I get severely pissed off, as most of us do.

So what’s to stop me from going and getting a drivers license with another name on it (since that’s good to go now) and then going and applying for public assistance? It seems that any questioning they might do could be handled with claiming discrimination.
