If they're looking for vigilantism to resurface, this is a good way to do it. Keep letting the convicts walk free to perpetrate more crimes, and eventually someone's going to get fed up and inflict some lead poisoning. Though I think perhaps a better deterrent would be the old "long drop and sudden stop" off a highway overpass.

A few hundred years ago I believe there was blood drawn for much, much less provocation, but the bread and circuses have numbed most into abject subservience.

Why ? Because he's old and still has faith in his fellow man. In the 50's US kids never screwed with an old man , partly in fear of our Father's kicking our @$$es. Plus HOW and I say HOW can anyone get satisfaction beating an old man or woman.
