NYPD Academy Question

For those on the NYPD or if this pertains to all PD cadets, my nephew is going into the April NYPD academy. He already did all his interviews and psych and is as good as in. He was asked if he had any firearms and he said yes. He has a NY compliant AR. He was told right before he goes into the academy he has to give it to the local PD, which is Yorktown, for safekeeping until he graduates. I looked this up but all I could find was this is true for handguns and permits. I read nothing about rifles. Does he really have to give his rifle to the PD until he graduates?

Years ago I took the NYS PD test. Did fantastic. I was in the top 1%. Number 103 out of over 13,000 that took the test. I had passed everything background check, physc, polygraph, all interviews. I was told by the background investigator and polygraph lady no problem you’ll be hired. Waiting for my medical exam to be scheduled and it never came. A few years before I bruised my kidney and had high blood pressure(had) and my heart beats a bit off. It’s benign and never caused me an issue. I got a letter saying never apply again. Only thing I can think of is this is why they denied me. The powers that be can deny you if they want.

I think my brother had to put his guns somewhere when he went in. I thought it was only pistols, but that was 20+ years ago.

I'm not 100% sure on the NYPD policy,but my dept made us turn in any handguns we had on a permit,if you lived in NYC and had any long guns on a permit you had to turn them in also.Anybody outside NYC didnt have to report long guns because there was no record anywhere.Also had to turn in the permit.Their reason was because once you were firearms qualified and working you possessed firearms by way of an exemption of weapons laws,not by way of a permit.Now,if while working you had some disciplinary issue that would require them to take your guns they could do so legally because they basically grant you the right to possess a firearm....and they can take it away.I believe the NYPD's policy and reasoning is similar.

Just know that if they catch any breaks in policy while on probation he can lose the job

Just curious in the reasoning? This seems to make little sense to me. Do they want to make sure he’s not carrying it to and from the academy or leaving it unattended for long periods when he’s not home?

I guess it’s because they don’t want to be associated with a recruit’s firearm until they are qualified. If they happened to get into some shit, it would end up on the department.

That's kind of bullshit. I understand the reasoning, but one person is not responsible for an entire department.

But hey, people are fucking stupid and blame one person of a group as the actions of the whole group.

You are indemnified by the city.They dont want to cover any liability until you are trained.Airborneguy,do you have a current pistol permit,or are you even allowed to have a permit? We were not allowed to hold a permit while employed.I didnt have one prior to working so I never tried to get one til I retired.

Police are civilians regardless, but when not on duty they should be charged for criminal or negligent acts like any other citizen.

As for the bus company, the driver would, I assume, be on the clock and in service to the company at the time they took the bus, dukes of hazard style, off a cliff. So in that case the company would be, in some capacity, liable. However, that liability is, I'd assume, limited since it's not a failure of the company if there were no other warning signs or reasons to think he'd drive a bus off a cliff.

I highly doubt the guy showed up for the interview and said "Man, do I love taking buses offroad" and the company said "You're hired."

As for how it works in the court of public opinion -- it's derpy and compliated and stupid -- I agree.

Thank you. He has an AR that I transferred to him when he turned 21. He found out he can transfer it back to me instead of giving it to the local PD to hold until he graduates. He really wants this job so he wants to do everything by the book.
