no .. x-bow is ok if you have your muzzle loader tag .. and i hear lots of hunters say you can't use x-bow in regular season .. Read the damn regulations and look at this attached photo.

So basically the one week breather from hunting that we enjoyed this year between the regular hunting season and the month-long extra season we had in January is gone. So there's essentially a three month continuous block of time when anyone who wants to use the woods fur non-hunting activities will be shut out
I'm all for putting a dent in the deer population, but there has to be a better way

Starting with bow on 10/1, there is essentially 3 months of big game availability. Although why they didn't just extend the season to 1/1, idk. I guess the deer get a week off for Christmas.

Although the way things are going, some will need to hunt year round for substinance

OK. I wasn't aware of the special January extension for Tompkins County. We have the early bear season here for 10 or so days in September too.

What do you mean? Many areas have parks where hunting is not allowed or areas of parks where hunting is not allowed.

I saw maybe ten deer total between September and Christmas.

Usually see anywhere from 3 - 8 on any given day 365 days a year.

It’s public land you can go anywhere unless it’s a wmu then hunting is prioritized. I’m not sure where you live but there are plenty of city, county, and state parks by me that hunting is not allowed at or is only allowed in parts of the parks. So much so that I could probably visit one each weekend day and not ever run out of places to go. I think you need to search your area better. I’m in the Buffalo area so I’m pretty city locked.

I'm in Tompkins County. Most of the places you cite don't meet my groups needs. The state lands where most of our trails are also happen to be the locations of the major trails in our county, and those become entirely unavailable during the months and months of no continuous hunting season.

I know my area just fine. We're out there a minimum of three days a week, and after years and years of that you get to know your county and surrounding counties fairly well as far as what areas are available that meet your needs. We have one WMU on Connecticut Hill, but the reality is that all of the state forests all throughout the county, not just Connecticut Hill, become off limits to non-hunters for the entirety of hunting season. Having non-hunters shot at by hunters doesn't endear the hunters to other people wanting to use that state forest. That's exactly what happened this last fall to another group using some state forest just a day after my group went through the same area.

Even when I was growing up 45 years ago in a rural part of the county, my parents impressed upon me that we couldn't even use the forests on our own private land because we couldn't trust the hunters to not be shooting at us. And that was when all we really had to worry about was a month of gun season, when there were far more hunters than there are now.

Gimme a freaking break Stewart State Forest is loaded with hunters, bird watchers, hikers and Mtn bikers all through every season. No issues the state land we hunt in South Sullivan has hikers passing through as well.

I'm glad that it works out for you guys in your area. Around here the forests pretty much get left to the hunters until the hunting season ends.
Adding more weeks to the season just means that the forests here are cut off for non-hunting uses for the duration of that added time.

I can’t imagine there is no where safe to hike during hunting season. Many state parks have areas where you can hunt and other places you can’t. I’m a bit far from your area but if Ithaca is in there I’m sure there are areas of some state parks where hunting is banned.
Best of luck to you and get out in the woods all you can. I hunt many areas where hikers and hunters interact I’ve never shot one of them. I’ve been shot at though smack dab in the middle of nowhere on private land.

I hear you. I’d hate road hikes as well. Stay safe and enjoy as much as you can. Also hiking during bow season should be safe. Wear orange and especially if you’re in a group. I know when I hunt public land I’ll run into others aggravates me at times but that’s life. Stick to the trails and hunters should be off them at least a bit.
