No different than Jan 14, 2013. Clear as mud. So far I haven't heard of any cases making it to trial and going the distance to force a court ruling, and we probably never will.
Personally I don't see why a Prince 50 bullet button wouldn't satisfy the law, but I'm not a lawyer and hate the idea of a fixed magazine on an AR. It makes the rifle nearly useless as a tool for which it's intended.

Shortly after NYSAFE went into effect, the NYSP had a little run-in with a gun shop in Albion, N.Y.. He had sold several AR's with bullet buttons installed. It wound up that he was forced to recall each of the rifles and epoxy over the bullet button so it was no longer useable. That was the deal made, and it allowed the gun owners to keep their rifles and the gun shop to remain open and out of trouble. Was there any ACTUAL legal actions that caused this ? I don't know for sure. I have the suspicion that the NYSP didn't WANT any legal action because it would set precidence and it would cause the "removeable magazine" section of NYSAFE to be defined. Without a legal definition, "fixed mag" means whatever they want it to mean.
As far as I know, there is still no legal definition to "fixed mag". Arguements as to what it means and as to whether your gun is compliant still occur every day. One gun shop sells one item, installed a certain way and claims that his solution is the only way to be in compliance. Another shop sells a different product and claims that the other gun shop is wrong. Without the law being tested in court, there is no way to be certain of your compliance.
It is my > OPINION < that your actions and intent have as much to do with whether or not a LEO will view you as being in compliance. Someone that made a real effert to comply is more likely to get a pass than someone that is attempting to skirt the law, regardless of how vague it is. LOCATION has a great deal to do with this as well. An Olean, N.Y. trooper is likely to view what MIGHT be a non-compliant rifle far differently than a White Plains trooper.

For the most part yes, but true or not many left wing groups said Trump made them feel like they needed to be armed and well armed with real guns. Now does that translate into them voting for progun candidates? Likely no, but if the demonrats see their base arming up it will get them thinking. Enough to do something? Not so sure about that, but you never know. They haven’t really talked much about gun laws this go around so something is up.

My advice would be a decent tactical shotgun since he isn't familiar with firearms , And of course penetration issues within an urban environment. A good second choice would be a Ruger mini 14 , magazine fed, fires same rounds as an AR, does pretty much the same thing.
A hand gun , is not a great choice , since it takes time to get good with it and requires more practice . Just saying, its not for beginners

I don't own any guns for self defense. Everything I own is just for fun or hunting but many of them would do great in a defensive role. If we are talking defending my home then my old 870 is the king. I've got plenty of rifles, but for short range stopping power, reliability, and just familiarity that's my go to gun. If we are talking defending during anarchy then the .22 definitely has a place. You could carry plenty of ammo. Accurately hit targets out to 150 yds while being stealthy. And in a shtf situation I don't need to actually kill you. Even a .22 hole in you will stop your advance and force you to receive medical treatment. So while not the best weapon for all situations and wouldn't want only a .22. The fact is it is still an asset to have if you needed it and should be at least one of your defensive firearms. I would urge him to get a .22 and shoot it a lot till he is familiar with guns and shooting. Also learning how to clean and inspect your firearm as well as reloading drills are more important than what gun you are holding.
