How state greed kept this coronavirus-fighting gift from being even larger
Kudos to the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, the Catholic charity that announced Tuesday that it’s donating $50 million to New York hospitals and nonprofits to help patients of all faiths diagnosed with the coronavirus.
It’s by far the largest such gift known in the current crisis, and incredibly generous.
The state’s archdioceses established the foundation in 2018, funding it with $3.2 billion from the sale of the church’s health-insurance nonprofit to Centene. The charity would’ve gotten an even larger endowment then — except that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s minions insisted on a multibillion-dollar payment to the state to allow the transaction to go ahead.
The Cabrini gift, though huge, is only a part of what’s needed as frontline medical workers struggle with supply shortages, an avalanche of patients and the frightening risk of catching the bug themselves.
They’d likely be getting even more help from the Catholic charity, were it not for the state’s near-blackmail of the church — which now looks more disgusting than ever.
