NYS Handgun Transport

I have a NYS Sportman handgun license.
While traveling in NYS And going to the range I either carry it on my person or when bringing
more than one I have it in a lock box unloaded out of reach and the ammo in a separate area.
E.g. handgun in trunk of car or back of SUV and ammo in a box on the floor in back seat.
Sometimes especially in the summer I don't want to carry it on my person or bother with another piece
of gear (lock box) so I would just place the handgun in its holster in my range bag or back pack out of reach.
Again the ammo would be in a separate place, floor of back seat.
Is this a legal form of carry if I ever get stopped ?

Yes, it's legal.

The restrictions placed upon your license are only administrative in nature. They are not statutory restrictions. Violation of those restrictions may get you in trouble with the issuing authority, but will not get you arrested.

NY is goofy, county by county discretionary interpretation. I would argue that locking it in the trunk constitutes the trunk as a lock box, unless of course you employee a trunk monkey in which case you need a trigger lock device. Lots of people I know in Erie County put them in range bags in the trunk for transport. No trigger locks. NY has feudal sub-governments.

Bob, I'm not worried about the restrictions. I understand how they work.
I'm worried that I do not have possession of my handgun by not having it on my person or by being locked up.

I dont know what kind of draconian county you live in but in most counties upstate its not a problem to have it on you concealed and loaded while traveling to do your "sportsman" activities. The second pistol (also loaded) can be on the seat next to you or anyplace of your choosing that is within your control.

in parts of this FUAC hole of NY we have places that say .. if you have a pistol in a box and the ammo in another box .. its still considered loaded .. WTF!!
