I took the Bowhunting course last summer. Mainly, so I could get the additional tag when I buy the Bowhunting stamp, which is also good for early crossbow and late muzzleloader.

Edit: additional tag when you buy BOTH the Bowhunting and muzzleloader stamps

I got that email on bowhunting. The chance of me ever bowhunting is close to zero, but I want to get it so I can get the broadhead icon on my driver's license.

That’s pretty much the same reason I did bow hunting and trapping. I’ll have all of the icons eventually.

I have an Enhanced Driver's License, close proximity to Canada, lots of Border Patrol here, for instant proof of American citizenship. Not sure of they put those on there.

Edit: I was able to add Veteran when I applied for it tho.

The good news: they do add those icons to an Enhanced Drivers license.

The bad: has to be a lifetime hunting/fishing/trapping license to add.

I'll never have an Empire passport, so the maple leaf is out. I do have the boater safety course under my belt, for the anchor icon, but I sold my boat a fee years ago, so I don't give a crap.

my observation.
i have always wanted to hunt. but being a city slicker and knows no one who hunts or grew up around one, the entry into this seems challenging.

westchester [bow only] and that too, for limited number of hunters in a qualification and lottery program. [currently closed for 2020]

Westchester County Adaptive Deer Management Program (ADMP)
DEP Access Permit

each county seems to have different restrictions and/or application process, they are not easy to locate on the websites.

for a person who has no background like me and wants to start at the bottom, this will be a very humbling learning experience.

Can you hunt small game in Westchester? You might start there (with a .22 rifle or even a 410 shotgun). That season also lasts longer than deer season.

I guess what I was getting at is getting out in the field and getting that experience (getting to know the woods, animal behaviors, etc) is as important as the shooting aspect.

Not to downplay the importance of being able to execute a humane kill appropriately at all.

Understood. I was just trying to provide accurate info. Westchester County is a pita on just about everything from what I've read.

understood. i have no experience in either just reading up quiet a lot of information. growing up poor in india the only experience i have is chasing the chicken in backyard catching it and helping dad prep for dinner or chasing rabbits with sling shots or home made bow with tree branches
