NYS Law Regarding Pistol AR Conversion

Figured I would create a thread discussing NY law for converting from pistol to rifle. Also what about converting back.

Figured some people might be interested with the new ATF ruling.

In most of the country it's not an issue as long as you don't make an SBR. But I am not sure about NY with having it registered on your permit as a pistol.

So, is the issue that if it is always and forever a pistol, that putting a stock on it is the violation? Slap that and a 20" barrel and you have what we all recognize as a rifle, aside from the paperwork.

If you have a brace, just take the brace off and "set it aside" for when/if the ATF ruling is overturned or tossed out, like the bump stocks were. You don't need a brace when you can use the buffer for a nice cheek weld. There's nothing illegal about the pistol. It makes literally no sense to take a pistol and convert it into a normal gay NYS compliant rifle. That just seems super silly.

I agree. I am just starting a thread to talk about guns and gun law. Tired of Pelose and Veritas conversations. I just picked something that was recent and interesting.

Turning your AR pistol into a rifle was one of the options listed in the ruling.

The only problem is convertible weapons was already ruled on by SCOTUS.

You can make a pistol a rifle and back again as much as you like. You can never make a rifle a pistol (legally). It has to do with pistols being under tighter scrutiny. We've had to look into this for my company's owner and another friend. For this reason he bought two sig pistols. Now there are options. Just make sure you change things in the right order or you're a felon for a couple of minutes with an sbr.

You can take pistol and turn it into a rifle and then back into a pistol. There was a ruling on this because of the Thompson center contender.

I think the whole business just plain gets mind numbingly stupid. As pretty much said above, a firearm is a firearm...and even the definition of a firearm is off the rails.

I have a rifle in a pistol caliber...is this a pistol nefariously disguised as a rifle, or an assault pistol, or some yet undefined chunk of metal or plastic? Some moron politician or unelected agency hack will undoubtedly apply brain fart tortured logic to make the case, and once again some of us will be made into criminals.

Alot of people have rifles that are pistol calibers, yet in alot of places, you can`t buy your rifle its ammo without having to show them a pistol license to buy the particular ammo.

that's why you do not shop at big box stores without a PP holder with you ..

or just hit the small mom n pop gun store FFL .. buy all the 9mm you want with no PP questions

Agreed! But now it may become more of an issue with the FFL`s taking your information now when you buy ammo in NY. Once this all gets put in their registry, no telling when they might just start looking into people that bought handgun ammo, that don`t own a handgun, then comes a knock on the door. I`m also willing to bet "straw purchased" ammo is a thing too.

Some of these places (and it has happened to me), won`t sell you the handgun ammo if you don`t actually have that particular pistol to use that ammo in on your permit. Several walmarts have done this. It happened only one time at walmart to me where they checked to make sure i had the pistol on my permit for the ammo i was buying. So i asked the clerk, "what if i don`t have that particular gun or caliber for this ammo i`m buying..." they simply said, "we aren`t allowed to sell the to you the ammo then". After that happened, i no longer bought ANY ammo ever again at walmart. We all know how big box stores are when it comes to policies. They usually suck.
