Nuke power tech has come a long way. There are reactor designs out there that can't melt down - thorium reactors are the go-to example, IIRC.

Nuclear power really is the only viable option for us, though it seems very difficult to achieve. We would need about 10,000 reactors, which take an enormous amount of money and time to build. If we assume each reactor lasts a century, we'd need to build 100 new reactors every year, forever... by the time we reached the replacement level for fossil fuels, we'd need to start replacing the 100 reactors we'd built a century before. (note: this is talking from a global perspective, not just US).

Jim Kuntsler was the first person I remember say that the only solution for future generation of electricity was nuclear. He made it clear that solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, what have you just wouldn't work.

That was in his book "The Long Emergency" first published in 2005.

My question was always "Where the fuck do they think all that copper and all the money is going to come from?".
