When I started my work in a prison I had to go away for a 2 week training seminar on how to interact with inmates and "the NYS plan" for them. NY is FIRMLY in the "reward the bad ones so they will behave" school of thought.

You know, just how you are NOT supposed to raise a child?

All the advantages mentioned could be accomplished in an instructor monitored classroom setting.
No need for each prisoner to have their own personal tablet in their cell.
Im all for educating prisoners but this is a bit over the top.

Here’s the one for NYS. They are getting them free. How does that work. 51,000 prisoners at $200 per tablet. That’s like $10 million. How do they get $10 million to just give these away. Somethings funky here. They must be getting a cut of what they buy or charging the state for the service or something. It’s not free. I don’t know. Anyone know the details on this?

Hey quick side note fellow statey, did you like the video interview of Joyce Mitchell by Matt Lauer? (had to watch that at a recent training)

As for the tablets... they've been using them in a pilot program for several months in some facilities. I don't know enough about their abilities to form an opinion, though at first blush I'm not impressed.

With recent changes to the ways that inmates are punished (or NOT, as the case may be), inmates have no reason to behave. They'll still be released early. They won't have packages, phones or recreation time taken away. About the only punishment available now is limited time in the SHU or transferring to another facility..

We also got to watch the SRT video where they recreated the escape. Cool stuff.

That bitch Joyce is why we have the clear lunchbags now. :(

Heard this reported all night while at work, they made sure the last thing said was "at no cost to taxpayers".

These aren't free, someone is buying them. Also what are they gonna do add some staff to walk these dirtballs through how to use them, oh and I'm sure they will never get broken,.

How about they pay for some of my students loans with that $10 million instead of pissing it away on people that don't deserve it.

Somethings still fishy. Nys not taking any commission. Also I love how they emphasized no state funding for the tablets not no state funding for this project. Somethings coming out of our pockets.
I’m sure JPay will make there money back on fees associated with sending money to the prisoners and them buying items, but still seems fishy.

You might be wondering, why would a company be giving away free tablets? This is why:

Inmates will be charged for every email they send or receive, and they'll be charged additionally for attachments. It works like this:

One "stamp" costs $0.35 and permits inmates to write an email of up to 5,000 characters. Inmates can only send emails when they've hooked up to kiosks, also provided by JPay, that offer inmates limited Internet access.

An example of an indoor kiosk, provided in the contract, is pictured above.

If prisoners want to send attachments like a picture, that's one stamp. If they want to send a picture and a card, that's two stamps. And if they want to send a 30-second "video gram," that's four stamps.

Inmates can buy stamp "bundles" at various rates, with a 60-stamp bundle costing $15.

Prisoners can also do "video conferences" thanks to the technologies provided by JPay. Those cost $8.99 for every 30 minutes.
