"According to Obama, nearly every problem facing the nation, even in the eighth year of his presidency, can be ascribed to George W. Bush. The remainder can be blamed on Donald Trump. That is quite the legacy."
Yup, that's quite the legacy all right.
Look, I get things are relative. I remember my parents talking about the '60s and riots, draft/Vietnam protests, racial unrest, political assassinations, etc. You could go back even further to my great-great-great grandparents who fought in the Civil War and you definitely could talk about a divided nation. However, I will say this. Growing up (mostly in the 1990s) while there were squabbles people mostly got along and believed in the course of this Nation and the values that we (used) to universally hold. Now I see that Slick Willey really dropped the ball not only on foreign policy (not going after Al Qaida/Bin Laden with vigor) and domestically (NAFTA anyone?) so politically things then weren't so great but overall with what I will admit are broad strokes, people regardless of race or class truly believed in this universal idea of America.
At least people generally speaking hadn't completely lost their fucking minds. The different races by and large got along relatively well, most attitudes were fairly patriotic if perhaps not overly so, cops were generally respected as were most traditional institutions, guns...hell virtually no one gave much thought to them (especially about banning them) at least where I grew up and people sure as hell would have said that it makes perfect sense to take a piss in the public bathroom corresponding to your current genitalia regardless of how you "self-identified." Obama takes office and all that gets turned upside down and inside out and now absolutely NO ONE is united. Racial unrest is the worst we've seen in decades (so much for progress), patriotism is considered racist and imperialistic, it's open season on police, everyone and their mom (hell there's even an AstroTurf activist group built around this concept...Moms Demand Action) that are actively trying to confiscate you firearms, and apparently I can now enter a ladies locker room at will if I listen to enough Shania Twain (Man, I Feel Like a Woman) that day. I honestly can't say if America as an idea (at least the way the Founders envisioned) is truly in existence anymore.
Barack Hussein Obama. Bringing us together like oil and water since 2008. So long Barry, and thanks for all the fish.
Sorry for the long rant. Must be turkey overload today.
