I just want to detail my experience with Odin Works dealing with a barrel I bought new locally.
Background:
I bought a new 223 Wylde, 1-8 twist, 18 inch, 3 gun profile Oden works barrel at a local gun store and installed it on a new build with a Nikon 6-24x 50 Fx 1000 black scope. Took it out to the range to test fire and zero. Got it on paper at 24 yards then moved out to 100 yards for accuracy testing. I had 3 loads to try out, PMC bronze, XM193 and some 52 SMK hand loads. Well it didn’t go so well I could not get a 5 shot group under 3 inches or a 10 shot group under 6 inches.
I took a couple of pics and sent an email to the company. They replied back and asked me a few questions about the configuration and if I had tried to shoot it without the muzzle device. I replied and told them I would try again the next week. Well I had heart surgery that week and wasn’t up to shooting the next week so it had to wait another week.
I gathered up 9 different loads including federal GMM match and two hand loads which produce 1/2” groups or less out of most of my 223 rifles. Took off the A2 flash suppressor cleaned the barrel of all carbon and copper then proceeded to the range.
I set up the rifle as before with a rest up front and a bag in the rear. I put a target with 12 one inch orange dots at 100 yards and started the testing. I fired 5 rounds from each type of ammo. I let the barrel cool for 5 minutes between each type of ammo. The results were not good the best group I got was with my 52 gr SMK at about 2 inches and the worst group, my 55 grain reloads, was about 5 inches. I put the flash suppressor back on and fired the most promising loads and they just opened back up.
I took pictures and sent them to the customer service email then called on Monday. The rep on the phone took a look at the pictures and said yeah we want that barrel back. So they sent me a UPS label and I was able to ship it out the following Saturday 31 July. Odin received the barrel on Friday morning and by 4:30 pm their time Monday 9 Aug I received a notification a package was in the mail to me.
Results:
I received an email from customer service stating they found damaged rifling past the gas port most likely caused by a bullet grabbing the rifling after passing the gas port. He stated before he put the replacement barrel in the mail he bore scoped it to ensure the port was in the groove so I would not have that issue again.
I called customer service and talked with them a bit and told them I was happy they confirmed I had not lost My mind and my shooting skills to COVID lockdowns. They are some really cool people and told me if I needed any help in the future just call, (and get this) even if it wasn’t their product they would be happy to help diagnose the issue. Talk about customer service!
I received the barrel today. Along with the new barrel came an adjustable gas block (even though I did not send the other one back with the barrel) a patch, toolbox stickers, a window sticker and a hat.
I have several Odin Works barrels and with the response I got from this issue I will continue to be a customer of theirs.
I will be installing the barrel this afternoon and have it ready for the range this weekend.
