I’m not sure how I feel on this. If I was buying a gun I guess I’d sure want to know if it was stolen or not. Even buying a new gun doesn’t ensure this. I like it but could see it going bad somehow some way. It’s sad even laws that have good intentions we are Leary of.

As long as your name isnt attached to the search, I believe its a great idea.
I actually had an issue like this where I was concerned about a gun.
I didnt know where to find out if a gun was ever reported stolen without possibly getting in trouble for a stolen gun.
Im not mentioning names but a member here helped me out......not stolen!!! Wooohoooo!!!

I agree. It looks like the agency that reported it is the contact.
I would call the local PD to have it run personally as you might have.
I will do the same with the VIN number if I buy a car privately.

I thought about calling the local PD but thats where you may get in trouble.
Its a long story but the gun I am talking about was not mine, it was a friends. He got WAY to good a deal on it so I thought maybe it was stolen. I didnt want to call the local PD in case they pulled the "possession of stolen property" on me.
I think a system like this would be good for those situations.

Stolen gun database, who's at risk the thief selling if anyone. The owner has already submitted a report of theft to get his property back. If guns stores and the buyer get to search anonymously its not a bad idea.

Actually all of my guns were purchased new -- but a good question would be what is the proper due diligence to confirm a gun isn't stolen? I assume checking with local and state police is a good start?

I'm looking into probably an SKS as my next rifle, so it'll be almost certainly pre-owned.

I wouldn't type any info into a search, but I may browse a long orderly list. I definitely wouldn't call NYSP to check anything like that, not even if I was calling from a pay phone in Mexico.

About a decade ago my friend called the police on his landlord.
When the cops came they got my friends info.....2 minutes later my friend was in the back of the cop car for a bad check 2 years prior.
My point is......I would NOT contact ANY law enforcement unless its an emergency.
If you call with the serial number of a stolen gun, chances are pretty good you will be arrested for possession of stolen property. Many cops just like to get crimes solved.....one way or another.
This system mentioned could solve that issue if your name isnt attached.
I had a gun run through like 6 agencies by a cop friend......thats the best current way to do it IMO.

Not to get too far off topic, but a guy I knew got the plate number of a car that was driving like an asshole on the thruway. He had a mutual friend, who was a police dispatcher, run the plate. The next day, the FBI was at his house. Turned out that the plate was on an undercover car. They were following someone. Dispatcher got his hand slapped too.

I'd only check a serial number on a gun if there were no way to track it back to me. Call me jaded, but I trust no one anymore

That’s whacked out man. Although I’m not sure why they would run the plate if they weren’t going to do anything about it.
