Oneida County wait time

Just wanted to share my experience with obtaining my permit here in Oneida County. I heard so many horror stories that I was dreading the whole process, but honestly it was not bad at all. I called the Sheriffs Office the second week in March and she had me in there the following week. Judge called me and left me a message that he had some questions for me on August 27th. I called him back the same day and we talked a little bit.

After he asked me some questions he told me he was approving me and that I should be getting something in the mail. Received my letter on Friday September 14th and purchased my pistol the same day. I will call in the morning to make an appointment to pick up my permit. Will post after I speak with them what the wait time on that will be. So far I’m at 6 months.

Not bad. I was right around 6.5 months about 7 years ago. I've heard it takes a couple of weeks to get an appointment. I've heard of other people taking up to 8 or 9 months so you did well.

What pistol(s) did you purchase? I did a lot of research into my first pistol (Beretta PX4 Storm Compact), and while it was a nice shooting gun I just couldn't get over the DA/SA as a first gun. (plus after I picked up a 1911 I found out the Beretta's safety operates the reverse of most safeties)

If you haven't already I'd recommend a dedicated .22LR pistol - they are so much fun and ammo is (relatively) cheap. I have a Smith&Wesson Victory in .22LR, but mostly shoot M&Ps. (I should have gotten an M&P in .22 to more closely resemble my carry guns but wanted the Victory)

After you get comfortable at the range I'd highly recommend a training class or two - I've taken several classes from Chris at Modern Defensive Training Systems - MDTS | MDTSTraining.com - they have classes a couple of times a year at Deerfield so it is local. (don't think he has any Deerfield classes planned the rest of the year though, he had one last month that I didn't have time to attend) I don't know of any other local trainers; may have to make the trip to Rochester-area if I want to broaden my training..

Some local clubs have various IDPA-style competitions, but I'm not a fan. YMMV.

Once I had my approval letter I went and fondled some pistols and I liked the way that felt in my hands the most, although I do need to order some mags with the slight extension on it or else my pinky and ring finger hang off the bottom of the grip. I almost went with the 45 because it was slightly thicker and felt extremely good in my hands, but I’ll start out with the 9mm for awhile until I’m comfortable.

I will be keeping my eyes open for classes opening up now as I would love to advance my training as much as possible. I would also like to find a place with an indoor range for pistols that’s open year round because it’s no fun shooting in snow up to your waist lol. My cousin has about 10 acres of land and normally that’s where I go to shoot my rifles and shotguns, but I need to join a place.

Wait what made you pick a XD (sorry it's not a Springfield, it's made in Croatia, the only thing Springfield has to do with the XD is they import them and sell them at a stupid high mark up price) over literally any other handgun?

I picked the XDs because I read a LOT of great things about it. When I went into my local place that I like to go to I looked at a bunch of pistols. Some of them just weren’t my cup of tea. I absolutely hated the way the glocks felt in my hands and was very uncomfortable imo. The XDs felt amazing and perfect in my hands with the mag extension. I love the safety on the grip and I all around just really like everything the gun has to offer.

You'll find most gun-owners don't have much respect for Springfield Armory or Rock River Arms.. DuckDuckGo or Bing search will tell you why. I don't know enough to have an opinion, also don't own either.

My M&P Shield (with 8 round extended mag - w/ +2 extended plate I'm currently testing for 10 round capacity) fits me quite well. I have a fullsize M&P 2.0 9mm and compact of the same, but being limited to 10 rounds in any of them I'm more likely to carry the Shield... though with winter coming the Compact is easier to conceal with a jacket.

To be fair I thought the XD was subpar even before Springfield sold out the 2A and gun owners

Yes it’s Judge Dwyer signing and that’s who called to ask me questions. I’m going to have restrictions because on my application I put hunting,Target,hiking,camping and fishing.

Honestly they’re really hard up about giving out unrestricted permits from what I’ve been told and you have to have a good reason as to why you want unrestricted. I do want unrestricted I just haven’t figured out what good reasons are to them to have one.

Anyway, I did finally get my unrestricted - I took several classes, and it also helps to work in Corrections I guess. I've heard training is the main thing - or if you work late shifts and/or carry lots of money for business.

I went for State Corrections but it didn’t work out for me. Three years of my time wasted, but it happens I knew it was a possibility. I work for NYS DDSO now with developmentally disabled individuals. But it’s state property so I couldn’t even use working until 11 as a reason. I do plan to take a lot of training classes though.
