Wow old thread. I know friends and family that carry in church, and clergy that have organized armed security staff from among their congregations. Not surprisingly, these staff members include active duty military and law enforcement as well as appropriately equipped civilians.

Houses of worship have been a soft target for too long.

That said, if you do feel the need to go to church, why in the world would you think to not carry there like everywhere else?

Perhaps he trusts that God will ensure that it is indeed bulletproof, and puts little faith in the goodness of his fellow man. But then, I have no idea what in the world, this one or the other, what a communist pope would think about anything, a real walking talking contradiction, that one. So I speculate.

Our church is very small and the congregation is mostly elderly. Someone has to protect them in case of some wacko comes in. If that happens to be me, then so be it.

Even some atheists have a church. The community they provide is valuable even if you lack the faith part of the equation.

They preach science, but at the same time they do not have the capacity to evaluate most scientific claims themselves.

So you get the types who say "well, you just have to trust the scientists". And that is faith.

Then some carry it too far, and claim you can't "question the science", that it is "settled", and make all sorts of appeals to authority.

At that point they have established dogma, anointed high priests, and ostracized blasphemers. I.e. they have adopted all the worst parts about religion, without ever naming a diety.

As atheism is the lack of belief in God or gods, the amount of faith required is zero. All that other stuff may be the views of some that are atheist, but it has nothing to do with their stance on that position.

You can also be atheist and religious, as plenty of religions have no gods associated.

Since the lack of God is unprovable, even in theory, an atheist must have faith that there is no god.

Untrue. The default position is to not belive something until convinced otherwise. And considering atheism is a lack of belief in a God or gods, not a belief "there is no God", it requires no faith.

If it was a belief that there is no God you would be correct.
