This situation is worse than just being on the west coast. I left the PRM (people’s republic of Massachusetts) because of laws worse than this. In the PRM not only did guns need to be locked, but also ammunition and ammunition components. Loan someone your truck and a single piece of brass left in the back of your truck could screw you both if the person does not have a Firearm license ( including just long guns). The insanity there has been going on for over 20 years and each year they just keep adding to it.
Trust me the NY politicians ( or the ruling class elite) are envious and just one crisis away from similar antics. I love upstate and Western NY, but relocated to Pennsylvania Rather than coming home to NY

Violation of the Heller V DC ruling. That means it is unconstitutional and should be ignored. It also means everyone who proposed, voted for and signed it is an enemy of the state.
That means that if someone steals a weapon from a police car and uses it the police department is liable right? I guess that only makes sense to normal people. That should also apply to stealing a gun from a cops house. If the citizens aren't allowed to easily protect themselves then the cops can't either

Having safe storage is a very good thing but I see it more as part of an education and instruction process.

I lock all my guns up. I have kids in the house. It’s just smart. Do I need the tax man telling me this no? If I did t have kids in the house I would not lock the o es in my bedroom if I were home. I would lock them if I went out.

Growing up, I knew where all the guns were in our house. Unlocked.
I knew where most of my aunts/uncles kept the guns. So did my cousins. Unlocked.
I knew where my grandparents kept most of their guns. Unlocked.
I knew where some of my friends' parents kept their guns. Unlocked.
And ammo was kept anywhere and everywhere.
NOBODY under 16 EVER touched, handled, fondled or even so much as looked at them without an adult present. It was an unwritten and largely unspoken rule. It was completely verboten and EVERY kid, cousin, niece and nephew just knew it.
Catching hell if you were caught snooping in the vicinity is an absolute understatement. It's like saying there's some water in the 4 oceans.

Mine are also locked up because I have kids. I won't criticize anyone that doesn't lock theirs up. It's your choice.

Oregon is very similar to New York. You've got a liberal cesspool in Portland that drives a lot of the politics of the state. Once you get out of the city though, Oregon is heavily conservative.
But they are locked when you go out.

That’s the problem isn’t it? They use our money to pass these laws then they want you to use your money to defend and overturn them as well? If they are unconstitutional tax money should refund you your legal fees. Better yet the salaries of the traitors that passed the law in the first place.

All court costs, lawyer fees, and damages come directly from the politicians whose names are on the bill as sponsors! Might keep them from being so quick to put out these "Throw it against the wall and see what sticks" Bills. Also get rid of severability clauses on any bill that deals with constitutionally protected rights. If one part of the law is unconstitutional, the whole thing is struck down and they will have to start over.
