So, I planned a nice little range day for today, and lately I haven't had too many positive experiences at the range, but today things were going a little better. I finally got one of my pistols working quite well without any malfunctions, so that was great. I'm testing a product replacement for a company that produces buffer pads. I'd like to avoid the details, but we've been talking back and forth for a while, and unfortunately the new buffer sets aren't working well.
Anyways, I also brought along my M&P 15-22 in case things went south with the testing. It's an amazing and fun plinker to blow a bunch of ammo for some fun. So I'm shooting for a while and I'm pretty use to shells kicking back and landing on my head or shoulder from time to time. Usually they're hot of course, but never any real issue that I've had, I'd just flick them off and it was no big deal. Even when they land the heat tends to dissipate fast enough where they're just warm to the touch.
So I'm shooting and I get this sharp stinging pain right next to my eye. I'm thinking oh shit what just happened! It was so instant after I fired the shot that I honesty thought a bit of lead or piece of shrapnel had come back and hit me in the face or something. I thought this because I've had blow back burn and embed into my arms and hands before. I had no idea what the hell happened. My instinct was to lift a hand up and feel my face. No blood, I didn't know what the hell hit my face. I pull off my glove and I think now it was a spent shell that must have ejected oddly and straight back. I'm thinking okay flick it off (in this short period of time) as I'm lifting my arm to flick the casing off, it drops and then gets wedged between the temple and hinge part of my eye protection.
At this point it got much much much hotter, and instantly burnt my face right next to my eye. I've actually never been burnt on my face from anything quite as bad as this little 22lr case today. There is an area the size of a half dollar (yeah, I don't know how either) that is swollen and blistered with skin that was so thin that after it bubbled up, it popped by itself a few hours later.
Well, I have learned today that just because the case is small, it doesn't mean it transfers heat away fast enough not to burn you pretty good. Glad it didn't land a 1/4" closer on my eyeball. I trimmed the dead pieces of skin off and it just looks like a little road rash now. The swelling is down too, but I'll have to be more aware. Just thought I'd share it because for me, it's not something I payed too much attention to until this happened. They're so small that they can land in crevices and areas where larger cases would not.
