Many years ago I was the manager at a Florida gun shop. My boss had taken his annual elk trip to Colorado and I was first call on the alarm list. Sure enough, about 1 am I got the call and was there in less than 10 minutes. We were located just outside the city limits, but everyone showed up - city with a K-9 unit, 2 other city cars, 4 county sheriff's deputies and Ghetto Bird overhead. After being greeted by two Glocks attached to a couple of officers, I was escorted quickly to the lead deputy, a sergeant that I knew quite well. He indicated that they had accessed the building through the rear walled courtyard by prying up the industrial strength roll up doors and then prying the steel skin off the outside of the door, digging out the core and then kicking in the steel inside of the door! There was a trail of guns on the ground to an adjacent parking lot. To make sure the building was empty they needed me to open the front door and conduct a thorough search while maintaining guard on the back just in case they were still inside. The alarm was still blaring and after what seemed an eternity, they declared that it was clear. For the next 3 hours the crime scene investigation unit worked while I was required to stay outside. Finally I was allowed to enter and assess the situation. Every case was smashed, many of the high end long arms were ripped from the walls, and the inner security system was destroyed.
For the next several weeks guns showed up at gun stores and pawn shops, and even a traffic stop. About half were recovered, only to remain in the evidence department of local police. The rest . . . ?
