In my youth during optional 1911 training another plebe asked the MCPO instructor why we tap the back of the mags, after the Master Chief figuratively ripped off his head and $h!t down his throat I just figured it was the right thing to do. A quick youtube check confirmed that Mr. Winman, when he taps, taps to the back so if it is good enough for hickok45, when I tap it will be to the back.

I always assumed it was to prevent the nose of the cartridge from rubbing the front of the magazine, either slowing things down with a weak mag spring or contributing to a nose dive.

I tap to the rear. why? I don't know. I just do.

The old M1 carbine likes me to tap the magazines to the rear - old or new mags - otherwise it doesn't always feed.
I imagine when I'm over 70 I'll have odd quirks too.

Simple....Always tap to the rear. It assures the cartridge is as far back and it can possibly be. Should the bullet tip be forward enough to not allow the mag to enter the well, there will be a loading issue. At the range it's not an issue, but in a firefight, it could be your ass. Tapping removes this issue.

you load them to the rear so I always taped to rear just made sense to me.
