Paint time

Finally got to the much needed painting on my lowly Savage 7A. It's been a great rifle, bet it's killed 10k squirrels and rabbits. Age and use was taking it's toll on the finish. My Encore 209x50 felt left out so I gave it a makeup job as well.
The colors weren't as dark as I would have liked but it'll do.

Thanks, I enjoy it too. Wished I could have afforded Ceracoat but this will do for now. It's easily changed if I get board with the looks too lol. Blued guns just aren't for me.

How do you prep the gun to make the paint stick?

I'm a bit crude, 220 and a paint thinner follow up to clean any oils off. Brake cleaner works good too. Some people like using 000 steel wool but I kinda prefer a bit more bite for the paint. If I was going to do a real nice job of it I would glass bead blast everything.

Thanks I still have my Savage Axis and AR to do yet. Need a couple parts for the AR and I'm holding off on the Axis till I decide what I'm going to replace the junk stock with.
It's pretty easy. I went to the woods this morning to get a few fern fronds and yanked a few bunches of pine needles from the tree in the yard for templates.

Nice job by the way, I want yo do this to my 870 Wingmaster that I use for turkeys but I dont want to mess it up. Its a 50 year old gun in great condition.

My guns generally get beat up, branches and briers dragged against them, scratched from riding around in my truck, knocked over from their rest against a tree etc. I don't dare own one with nice blueing and a fine wood stock lol. They are definitely tools in my shed
Functionally the get kept in tip top shape, but forget the looks. Well, the 7A is a bit wore out. I have a replacement trigger group to put in it, it does funny things if you're trying a nice and easy squeeze shooting targets. It needs a deliberate squeeze

How do you prep the gun to make the paint stick?

Degrease it.

When I have done mine I just used Gun Scrubber. It strips the oils right down.

Some people have said use break cleaner. That kinda weirds me out cuz that stuff is a bit harsh.

Others have used nail polish remover etc.

Basically get the oil off the metal as gently as possible. for the non metallic parts use what ever grease cutter won't harm the surface.

Google is your friend here. And it will direct you to another gun forum (not sure if the rules allow me to name other forums) that has a lot of info and photos.

It's easier than it seems. It's scarier than i actually needs to be.

As for resale.... That's another discussion.

I have painted mine and it's never been an issue. Besides a little paint thinner and time and all is back to the original (kinda).

Nice. I just painted the 870. Sanded it real nice. Brake kleen. Primed it real good. And spray painted the heck out of it. Now I can't get the pumper/charger whatever thing in. Cause I primed and painted real good. LOL.

I see a lot of guys using brake clean on YouTube but it is a bit crude. Works great though. I just use rubbing alcohol or paint thinner. When I get rich enough, lmao, I want to redo all mine and start with a base coat of Ceracoat then camo over it. That way when the camo gets beat up or you want to change up the colors for hunting different season you just wipe the camo paint off with nail polish remover and start over.

Went a bit darker with my AR...
