I don't know what is like in other places around the country, but here in Western NY, there are so many local pizza joints to choose from that make amazing pizza, why would anybody go to a chain and get a crappy pizza?

The slump in sales has more to do with his crappy pizza than any comments he may have made.
Who knows what the real reason is. The article states "many believe it’s indirectly because of the furor surrounding his criticism of the national anthem protests in the NFL."
So "many believe" his decision to step down is "indirectly" due to his criticism of the NFL. That's not a news article it's an opinion piece and poor one at that. No one is quoted directly, least of all the founder himself. Who cares how many people believe something was indirectly caused? If me and 5 of my friends "believe" he stepped down because he was an alien would that justify a news article?
Who knows - in this environment it's just as likely he was sexually harassing his employees. It seems everyone who is stepping down is guilty of sexual harassment.

You totally nailed it. We are somewhat lucky to have so many great pizza joints around.
For a laugh, I order chicken wings in other states when I travel. There's no excuse for some of the "wings" being sold out there. It's not that hard to make good sauce that doesn't taste like paint thinner.
The Papa makes a mediocre pie for a mediocre price - I'm sure the company will do fine without him and he'll still make plenty of money off the company.
I was kidding. Everyone know there is no such thing as watermelon pizza. That's just ridiculous.
Now fried chicken pizza is another thing...
