I'm currently building an AR and I've gotten into the whole spur grip Patrick Henry thing and I like it. Well I'm an AK guy through and through and I love my saiga, got her at herbs for 600 a while back, I want to convert it one day and get as close to traditional as possible, all the plum furniture you can imagine, what I'm wondering is if the ak can benefit from a trigger guard finger rest like the AR can in conjunction with spur, would it still have the legalish leaning it does on AR because it's a trigger guard and isn't written about in safe act or different because it's an ak?

I just ordered this "featureless grip" after having gone from the spur (which I hated) to the Monsterman grip which was pretty good. Gonna give it a try...

Isn't that just a pistol grip with a fin on it? It works in California because they define pistol grip as a grip that doesn't allow your thumb and web of your hand to go around the grip. Our state doesn't.
Absent any real definition in our shithole, It's as good as any. Can't get a pistol style grasp. Any visualization in a courtroom imo is persuasive.

But our law doesn't say anything about pistol grip style. It's still a pistol grip with a fin attached to it. If that were legal here, all we would have to do is put a piece of kydex on a regular pistol grip and call it a day like they do in California.

There's a stock. Not a pistol grip.It is held in the same exact manner as my VEPR's.
Yeah but it works both ways. They didn't define it making it vague to follow. No jury would convict if in good faith you attempted to comply. Also district attorneys would be hesitent to charge for that alone.

If that's what you believe and you want to base your freedom on faith that you won't get charged than okay. Most of these cases are pled down to lesser charges since the average Joe cannot afford the time and money. We've yet to see one of these cases go all the way no matter how much the've raised on GoFundMe.

I remember seeing ak type sporting rifles with this thing on them in NY gun stores. Can't say if they are legal but I've seen store selling rifles like this.

BS act does not (to my knowledge) define what a "pistol grip" actually is; it also "redefines" as a bannable "feature" a "(b) Protruding Pistol Grip" but further, doesn't define "protruding." Remember when these people who knew nothing about guns pushed this through in the 0dark30 and made damn near every cop in the state a felon along with us plebes? Same crap- they know the 2nd circuit is on their side and/or gives a rat's ass.
I hate the concept and pricnciple but have worked to the Thordsen and it works for me. The wraps and other work arounds don't, even setting aside the law. Your mileage may vary depending on your needs and circumstances - which is how it should be.

But a holster isn't illegal nor is the firearm in it if licensed. The grip is however if attached to a semi automatic rifle that can accept a detachable magazine.

This^^^. You wouldn't even be able to hold it properly one handed if running with something else in your hand.

I see what you did there, calling it a grip. That's not what the law says. The law only pertains to a pistol grip or a protruding forward grip. This is not a pistol grip. It is a "fin grip", or "featureless grip". You don't get to redefine the definition of a pistol grip just because someone designs a new product that MUST be held in a different manner than a traditional pistol grip.

I'm not redefining anything. The law says a protruding pistol grip. No definition. It's a protruding pistol grip with a fin attached. Had it been just a flat fin with no grip attached to it, you'd be on to something.
However, there is no answer whether it is still considered a "pistol" grip. That needs to be defined. Is a kydex wrap enough? Is a one piece featureless grip enough? Is a Spur enough? Like I said....move out of NY to be sure.

They also really don’t define what “protruding conspicuously” means either. But I’d assume it means a significant proportion of the grips length is beyond the action. The spur on the AKs is almost perfectly in line with the action, within a few mm, but not perfectly on it.

Hmm. "Conspicuously"... Technically speaking, a full sized pistol grip made of clear plastic would be legal.

My only quibble with this, because you and I are on the same page, is that your second sentence does define it- but it isn't defined in the law. They left this ambiguous for a reason, but that doesn't mean we get to disambiguate it (legally) on our side.
