Pcc questions for first time gun buyer

Your main problem in NY with a PCC is that some stores INCORRECTLY believe you need to have a pistol permit to buy pistol caliber ammo. Not all, but some do. With that said, .22LR is more available and cheaper and might work for you depending on use.

A Ruger PC9 is basically a 10/22 in 9mm, a great little carbine. I have both ( actually 3, 10/22's ) for training it is all about trgger time and the cost of 22's sure allows more trigger time.

For hunting a 22 would also work well on small game, a PCC you would need to block the magazine capacity to 5rds in NYS .

The PCC would be a better choice for home defense.

There really is no jack of all trades with firearms.

If your a new shooter I would say get a 10/22 . I shoot my 22's a lot more then my centerfire firearms, as I said it's trigger time.

1. Yes, but it can be more than that. It's a decent home defense option as well. Within 50 yards it can protect your life for sure.

2. A shotgun is an awful first fire arm. Great way to learn a flinch and be a terrible shot with a rifle.


3. Yes, especially with FMJ ammo and good aim, you can take squirrels to coyotes.

Closer to a "jack of all trades " would be a .357 or .44 magnum lever action. Within 100 yards, a .357 magnum can kill deer, defend you, and take small game with .38s.

The PCC is also just a lot of fun! I have modded mine with some Midwest Industries furniture; just did not like the standard plastic furniture. Ruger now makes the PCC with different Furniture and also in 40S&W.

I have a 1-6 Burris scope on mine. I used it for a carbine class last October. I was able to keep up with and even, outshoot some of those who were running ARs. Go ahead and buy one, you should also buy a 10/22.

The PCC is a great training tool. I’ve taken mine to three carbine classes. You totally want won just fir the fun of shooting it. Any experience shooting a 10/22 completely scales. I love it.

However, it isn’t a match rifle. I bough a Nikon 1.5-4 scope for it. But, I was not impressed with the consistency of most 9mm factory ammo. I eventually settled on a Bushnell TRS-25 and seldom shoot it beyond 25 yards.

I wouldn’t hunt with the pc9. I don’t think it’s accurate enough unless you get within 25 yards. It’ll destroy any small game. Also, hunting with a autoloading center fire rifle is limited to 5 rounds. I haven’t found 5 round mags for it.

You can get a Savage Axis 223 or 243 at a Bud’s for less than $300. After tuning the load, you’ll be death to any woodchuck within 400 yards.

I wouldn’t totally write off the PC9 solely as use as a training aid. I think it’s plenty accurate inside of 50 yards and it is accurate enough as a defensive weapon against man sized objects. In general my PC9 likes heavier bullets in the 124 and 147 grain range. Seems to be a little more accurate in those weights. Try switching to a red dot and heavier bullet weights, it’s more appropriate given the accuracy of a pistol caliber carbine.

I was able to put shots in an 8 inch circle at 125 yards while standing and unsupported with an AR9. I never went back to that range with my Ruger PC9 but it was just as accurate as my AR was. At 25 yards, all my shots were were in a tight group less than an inch while supported on a bench. I wouldn’t say it is inaccurate.

As far as hunting goes, you can take anything from squirrel with headshots to deer with the right ammo. And if using 147 gr hard cast. even larger animals with the correct shot placement.

I don’t think the PC9 is an inaccurate rifle. I don’t think that factory 9mm FMJ practice ammo is particularly consistent. I have noticed a POI shift between shooting from a bench and shooting off-hand. So, I don’t use it for bench shooting. I have a dozen other rifles for that. However, the PC9 is most suitable for the defensive role. I mostly shoot it off hand at 15 yards. So, I don’t worry about ammo consistency because shooter consistency is a larger factor.

FWIW- I ran a fair amount of Speer Lawman through my AR9 (when I still had it, it lives in Michigan now). I found it and that ammo quite consistent out to 100 yards but that gun was (is) also fairly high spec. I basically had the same experience @Marine Cpl reports from his, I think.

I wouldn't hesitate to use it in the home defense/truck gun role depending on what ranges are involved. I gave it to my father in law in exchange for a Howa 300 winmag, it was a win win, the 9 now has the correct furniture on it and is a blast to shoot 33 round mags through... I digress.

This is strictly my opinion and I'm somewhat jaded based on what our options are in NY so I'm using that as a basis for answering.

The PCCs I would personally want aren't exactly "compliant" with the unsafe act. So I really haven't seriously looked into them.

If I were you I would skip the PCC and either choose a .22lr semi auto or go to a centerfire rifle.

For center fire rifles you can't go wrong with an AR15. They are super fun. There is a reason they are the most popular rifle in America. Another choice would be an SKS or keltec su16. Granted .223/5.56 is more than 9mm it's not a prohibitively more. And SKS's 7.62x39 is slightly cheaper than the .223.

I think every citizen who wants one should have an AR15.


Honestly there really are stores out there that sell PCC guns but will refuse to sell you the ammo for it unless you have a pistol permit with that cartridge. Yes. Insane.

.22lr you can shoot all day for $25 and practice. As far as home defense everyone mocks it. It wouldn't be my first choice but I don't think I would just stand there either. Getting shot by a .22 can still kill just the same.

A centerfire rifle is a much more capable choice for any sort of home defense, SHTF type choice.

I love my PCC. It’s a blast to shoot. I’ve only shot mine indoors to 25yds, but at that range with stock irons, I’m just making one hole in the paper. Accurate enough for me. Plus, there are enough aftermarket parts (and more coming) to keep the tinkerer busy.

As soon as this plague blows over, I’m looking forward to taking a defensive carbine class with it.

It sure is when other means are available but effective when it’s the only thing you have with the proper shot placement which is what this PCC is designed for. It’s a break down survival rifle that can fit multiple roles. Jack of all trades. Master of none but able to be used with more things than a .22.

Correct. And if that’s what you have in a backpack while out in the woods, it is better than your fists. And a PCC in a backpack os better than that stick. And a .308 in a backpack if they make such a thing is better than the PCC but not for squirrels.

I would surmise that a 147 grain hollow point would work on deer in a pinch, but I would probably go with my .357.carbine on deer.

9mm Deer. A reloaded 124 Gr Hornady XTP. One shot hit despite all his misses afterwards. From a 16 inch barrel it’ll be going at almost .357 Magnum velocities from a revolver.

We are probably wasting our time. Most people think they need .300 win mag these days to kill a deer at 50 yards.

Be forewarned, the PCC is heavier than it looks. If you're expecting a .22 in a plastic stock weight, you'll be wrong.

It shoots well and I've not had any problems with mine. I run the Ruger mags and can/have run a modified Springfield XD9 mag. S&W 9mm magazines can be notched to work as well.

The Ban State Carbines come with short 10 rd Ruger SR9c Mags , not full sized 10 rd magazines that can be used in a SR9 or SR9c.

It serves a purpose. It is not not a replacement for an AR or other defensive rifle ( I tend to think SHTF when buying guns) . As a 100 yd gun, I'm happy with it.
