What about the guys that clean and oil their guns the night before opening day. I have wondered that if I can smell the solvent and oil on the guys gun, the deer have to be able to.
There is absolutely no way to eliminate all the scents that humans bring into the field. The only sure fire way to beat their nose is to stay downwind of them. If the deer are used to human smells, they won't run to the next town when they smell you. I've had them come out into the field I was hunting less than 2 minutes after a 4 wheeler drove by.

Funny story.
My first deer hunt when I was 16 years old was unusual. My 19 year old friend and I went to my parents property just at sun up. We walked a couple hundred yards into the woods and sat on a log to plan our hunt. My buddy lights a cigarette and I ate a piece of cold pizza I had wrapped in foil. We were talking quietly, eating pizza and smoking.....while hunting.
During a pause in our conversation we hear a stick snap. We both turn our heads and there is a huge 8 point stareing at us broad side about 20 yards away. Without hesitation I grab my 870, draw on the deer and pull the trigger. The buck dropped without so much as an ear twitch.

I think that whole scent cover up and be quiet is nothing but BS when it comes to hunting stupid ass deer.
I eat I drink I smoke cigars, talk on the phone, two way radios, even cook up food and coffee while I hunt. Hell I even take a dump out there (closer to where my buddies sit obviously) and still shoot deer.
Mountain goats are a different story.

Every deer a friend of mine shot for about 10 years has been while he was smoking a cig lol. I don't smoke but I'm sure they can smell the Copenhagen on me, or the constant cup of steaming coffee. I have family though that won't go to the woods without the ritual Dead Down Wind shower, cloths cleaning then packing in bags with pine branches, and scent eliminator for afield, cover scents, etc etc lol. Works for them, hot coffee works for me

If the wind is in your favor - no problem. I have had 3 separate occasions where I was able to actually touch a deer with my gun barrel, while hunting. All were while I was standing in a hedgerow, nestled between a couple tree trunks on a fenceline. No camo, no scent cover, red wool plaid. -- The 3 deer were does, didn't have a permit at those times, but it was really a memorable time. The does, on each occasion, actually grazing in front of me, my barrel of my shotgun over their backs.

I agree. Deer have no problem standing in the damn road with loud cars and smelly exhaust. They also have no problem hanginng out in my yard next to house containing loud smelly humans!
Not to mention that they are color blind. I hunted for decades with blaze orange hoody successfully. Hunting buddies were amazed.

What about the effectiveness of doe urine as a way to bring in a buck? Not so much to cover your scent, since I don't think human scent is as disruptive to their routine as some think. In my experience, when they wind you, they do become curious depending on how stirred up they have been. It seems to me that even if they know you are there, as long as you stay still, they really don't see you. As soon as you move though, they are usually gone. I only ask about doe urine because I am thinking of trying it this year.
I use cover scents, but not attractants. Use them at the wrong time and they are actually worse than going in the woods without showering.

Ive gone hunting, successfully, with using urine,attractants and just being a smelly redneck. It really is a luck of the draw.
